According to the website of the Spanish sports daily BrandSaudi Arabia has pulled out of the race to host the 2030 World Cup. “Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud recently contacted the representatives of Greece and Egypt to announce to them that they were finally giving up their candidacy for the 2030 World Cup”, reports the Spanish media.
The Saudis would have been notably deterred by the “power” of the Moroccan-Iberian project. “After carefully considering the realistic possibilities, Saudi Arabia concluded that it was impossible to compete with the Spain-Portugal-Morocco bid, realizing the work already done and the advantage they have in all aspects after years of serious and discreet work”, adds the newspaper.
The only remaining contender for the Moroccan-Iberian bid is now the South American bid led by Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay. It should be recalled that the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, today chaired the first meeting of the supervision committee of the Moroccan candidacy.
