Beyond Resolutions: Designing a Life You’ll Be Proud of
We often approach goal-setting with a focus on what we want to achieve – a promotion, a new skill, a financial target. But what if the most impactful goals aren’t about accomplishments, but about how you want to feel? This shift in perspective is the foundation of truly meaningful life design.
Many believe success will naturally lead to positive emotions. However, experience shows us it often works the other way around. Prioritizing your desired emotional state can dramatically improve your journey and the results you achieve.
the Power of Emotional Goal-setting
Consider this: what do you want to feel more of this year, and what do you want to feel less of? This simple question can be profoundly revealing.
I recently worked with a client, jonathan, who had never considered framing goals around emotions. He realized he craved more centeredness, spaciousness, and loving connection. Concurrently,he wanted to diminish feelings of anxiety, being overwhelmed, and seeking external validation. He desired peace and freedom from being overly attached to specific outcomes.
This isn’t just about “positive thinking.” It’s about intentionally shaping your life to align with your core values and emotional needs. A well-designed life doesn’t just look good; it feels right.
The Five-Year Test: A Lens for enduring Value
To move beyond superficial goals,I introduced Jonathan to a powerful exercise: the Five-Year Test. Ask yourself: if this year is wildly triumphant, what will you be proud of five years from now?
This expands your time horizon, separating fleeting wins from lasting fulfillment. It encourages integrity in your present actions. long-view thinking simplifies the present, allowing you to act with intention and purpose, rather than reacting to urgency.
For Jonathan, this meant envisioning a more open-hearted relationship with his son and brother – and knowing they would feel that shift from him. This tangible vision transformed his goals for 2026 into something deeply meaningful.
Fewer Goals, Better Decisions
Stepping back and examining your life as a whole reveals a crucial truth: goal-setting isn’t solely about productivity. it’s about life design – your sense of meaning, purpose, and the “why” behind your actions, not just the “what.”
As Simon sinek eloquently demonstrated in his TED Talk on The golden circle, understanding why you do something is far more powerful than simply knowing what you’re doing.
Before diving into resolutions, take a moment for self-reflection. Consider these questions:
* Who are you becoming? What kind of person do you aspire to be?
* What season of life are you in? Are you building, resting, or transitioning?
* What are you willing to say no to? Protecting your time and energy is vital.
* How do you want your life to feel? Focus on the emotional experience you desire.
* What will you be proud of in five years? Envision your future self looking back with satisfaction.
The quality of your goals is directly linked to the quality of your exploration. These are your a priori goals – the foundational principles guiding your choices.
from Intention to Action
This year, aim for fewer goals, but make them better. Like Jonathan’s, focus on aspects of life that encompass relationships and qualitative experiences.
At the end of our coaching session, Jonathan expressed a level of pride and dedication he hadn’t felt at the start of any previous year. He was confident in the goals he’d set, and excited to pursue them.
Ultimately, before you chase what you want, decide who you want to become. That might potentially be the most vital decision you ever make.
