From Gangster to Pastor: How free English Lessons Led to a Cambodian ministry

A desperate need to learn English can sometimes open doors to unexpected life transformations. This is the story ⁤of ‍Pastor Khan, a Cambodian leader whose journey from a life of hardship adn gang⁣ involvement to becoming a respected pastor and government official began with ‍a free English class offered by a Christian church.

The Unexpected Path to English Fluency

Imagine being offered a lifeline – free english lessons – but with a condition. That’s what happened to Khan. As he shared with a friend, the opportunity came through a church-based program.⁣ While initially hesitant, his desire⁤ to learn⁢ English outweighed his concerns.

This wasn’t just about grammar and vocabulary. The classes,⁢ run⁣ by Filipino missionaries trained by the Asian Center for Missions ⁢(ACM), included ⁤a unique requirement: students were asked to share their faith. “My pastor said every‍ student should preach‍ the gospel,” Khan explained, “If not, you will not graduate.”

A Life-Changing Encounter with Faith

Khan initially fulfilled the requirement, sharing the message of ⁢Jesus with those around‍ him. But something shifted‍ within him.after five months, ⁢he realized ‍he believed the⁢ message himself. He accepted Christ, and his life took a dramatic turn.

“From that time I commit myself to serve God with my whole ⁢life,” he said. This commitment wasn’t just a personal decision; it became the foundation for a ⁤remarkable ministry.

Building a Legacy ⁣of Faith and Service in Cambodia

Today,Pastor Khan leads a church in Kampong Thom,Cambodia. ‍But his impact extends far beyond ⁢his local congregation. He’s been instrumental in:

Planting ⁤200 churches across cambodia’s 24 provinces.
Discipling pastors, equipping them to lead their communities.
Running weekly feeding programs in 25 villages, providing nourishment for both body and soul. ⁢He believes in feeding children⁢ not just ‍with food, but with the Word of God.
Establishing a children’s home for orphans and vulnerable children, offering them a safe⁢ and ⁣loving environment.

His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed.‍ Pastor Khan⁣ now serves as Undersecretary of Cult and Religion in Cambodia. This position ⁤allows him to ⁤advocate for Christian churches,⁣ particularly in remote areas where⁤ persecution can be a threat, ensuring they can freely share their faith.

From Darkness to Light: The Role of⁢ ACM

Pastor Khan ‍credits ACM with playing a pivotal role in his conversion. He reflects on a past that could have easily led to prison or even death. ⁤”Without ACM, I might have been killed…or in ⁤the ‍prison,” he stated. “But by the grace of God through the ACM, God called me out of the dark world.”

He sees his⁤ life as a testament ‍to God’s power to redeem and restore. He went from feeling “hopeless and⁤ helpless” to being used ‍by God to bless an entire nation.

A Future Filled with⁤ Hope

Pastor Khan ⁤remains steadfast in his mission. He believes, with God’s help,he can continue to reach⁤ more communities and individuals with the message of hope.⁣ His story is a powerful example of how a simple act of kindness – offering free english lessons – can have a ripple effect, transforming lives and impacting an entire⁤ nation.
