A Love Beyond Measure: One Woman’s Exceptional Gift of Life
The vows we make – “in sickness and in health” – are frequently enough tested, but rarely with a challenge as profound as the one facing Jim and Mirna Irish. Their story isn’t just about a medical procedure; it’s a testament to unwavering commitment, selfless sacrifice, and the extraordinary power of love. It’s a story that begins with a chance online connection and culminates in a life-saving gift, against all odds.
An Unlikely Pair, A Destined Connection
Jim Irish, a prosperous inventor and tech entrepreneur, spent the first half of his life focused on innovation. He built a career creating and selling patents, even earning a spot on San Diego’s Technology fast 50. Mirna Irish, simultaneously occurring, was a dedicated schoolteacher in Tijuana, courageously raising three children, including a son with paraplegia, as a single mother. Their paths might never have crossed without the serendipity of an online dating site.
“When I met Mirna, I just knew,” Jim recalls. That first date felt different, a connection that promised something special. Mirna echoes the sentiment, calling it “the best night ever.” it was a connection that quickly blossomed into a love that woudl soon face its ultimate test.
A Cascade of Challenges
Two years ago, Jim’s life took an unexpected turn with the finding of a serious health issue. What began as a search for answers quickly revealed a complex medical landscape. Doctors initially found a growth on his left kidney, necessitating its removal. This was followed by the removal of part of his lower colon, hemoglobin shots, and intravenous infusions.
Then came the most frightening news: a cancerous tumor on his right kidney. “Lots of things go wrong with the body when your kidneys don’t function properly,” Jim explains. But even as Jim battled these health setbacks, another challenge emerged.
A One-in-a-Million Match
Mirna, without hesitation, offered to be tested as a potential kidney donor. The odds of a perfect match are astronomical - roughly one in 100,000. Remarkably, Mirna was that one in 100,000. “That’s my sign right there that I am here to help him,” she says with unwavering conviction.
However, the path to donation wasn’t straightforward. doctors discovered inactive tuberculosis in mirna, a remnant of a childhood vaccination. This required six months of treatment before she could even be considered a viable donor. “I was so worried,” Mirna admits, “I thought, ‘What if I can’t? What if I want to, and I can’t?'”
Adding to the emotional strain, Jim underwent another surgery, but thankfully, as of two weeks ago, he is now cancer-free. it was a series of hurdles,Jim notes,”a lot of things that were just organic.”
A Unique Surgical Approach & Promising Outlook
The surgery, scheduled for August 8th at Sharp Memorial hospital, is a notable step toward a brighter future. Interestingly, because Jim’s remaining kidney still functions at about 10%, Mirna’s donation will augment his existing kidney function rather than replace it entirely. This unique approach offers a potentially smoother recovery and improved long-term outcome.
Sharp Hospital boasts a nearly 100% patient survival rate after one year post-transplant. this provides reassurance and hope for Jim’s future. He envisions a life filled with travel and, most importantly, continued love with his wife.“I just want to travel and love my wife as much as I can,” he shares.
A Love Story for the Ages
This isn’t simply a medical story; it’s a powerful illustration of the enduring strength of love. Mirna’s willingness to undergo testing, treatment, and ultimately, donation, speaks volumes about her devotion. Jim acknowledges the profound impact of her sacrifice.“Emotionally, she stepped up. She stepped up and saved my life,” he says with heartfelt gratitude.
Mirna,in turn, expresses her deep affection for her husband. *”He’s the love of my life. He’s more than I
