BAFTA Expands Voting Base for International TV Awards, Reflecting a Globalized Industry
BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, has announced meaningful changes to its Television awards, most notably opening up voting for the International category to its full 6,000-member base. This move signals a commitment to broader member engagement and recognizing the increasing prominence of global television content.
Why the Change?
Previously, the International category utilized a jury system for the final rounds of voting. Now, all BAFTA members will participate in determining both nominations and winners. BAFTA stated this adjustment will “strengthen the category and ensure the very best international programmes get the recognition they deserve.” It also reflects the evolving landscape of television production and consumption. This isn’t just a procedural shift; itS a recognition of how interconnected the world of television has become. You’re seeing more international co-productions and series gaining traction with global audiences.
Recent International Category Winners Showcase global Appeal
The International TV category has consistently highlighted compelling series from around the world. Consider these recent winners:
2024: Class Act (Netflix France) - a surprising win over major hits.
2023: Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey dahmer Story – a controversial choice that sparked discussion.
2022: Shōgun (Disney+) – demonstrating the appeal of Japanese storytelling.
These selections demonstrate the category’s ability to recognize quality programming beyond traditional English-language productions.
Supporting UK Talent in a Global Market
BAFTA also announced a tweak to eligibility rules for submissions. For projects with at least five candidates, a single exemption will be allowed for a senior team member who isn’t UK-eligible. However, 80% of the team must be based in the UK, and a clear justification for the exemption is required.
This adjustment acknowledges the increasing frequency of international co-productions while reaffirming BAFTA’s dedication to celebrating UK talent and craft. It’s about finding a balance between global collaboration and supporting the domestic industry.
Streamers Make Waves,Public Service Broadcasting Holds Strong
Last year’s nominations saw record representation from American streaming services like Netflix,Apple TV+,and Amazon Prime Video. Shows like Baby Reindeer, Slow Horses, and Rivals garnered multiple nods.
However, the awards themselves saw success for public service broadcasting (PSB) shows, with Mr Loverman and Mr Bates vs the Post Office taking home top honors. This highlights the continued importance of both traditional and new players in the television landscape.

The expanded voting base for the International category is a key part of this vision. By involving more members in the process, BAFTA aims to ensure that the awards truly reflect the best of global television.
This year’s awards promise to be a party of both British and international television, acknowledging the power of the medium to spark debate and showcase exceptional creativity.
