A brazen robbery at the Aruma Grocer on Devonshire Street in Surry Hills took a tragic turn Monday evening, culminating in the death of the suspect after a confrontation with a customer and subsequent police pursuit. The incident unfolded just after 8 p.m.,leaving the community shaken and raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The Robbery & Heroic Intervention
Initially, a man entered the grocery store brandishing a knife and demanding cash. He was described as being in his 40s, wearing a luminous red hoodie and a purple balaclava to conceal his identity. Fortunately,a swift-thinking customer stepped in,bravely attempting to deter the robber.
The customer,dressed in a pink hoodie and gray sweatpants,reportedly waved a mop at the suspect during the minute-long ordeal.
The suspect then allegedly made off with the store’s cash register, containing less than $200.
CCTV footage confirms the suspect’s attire and the customer’s courageous act.
The Escape & Police Pursuit
Following the robbery, the suspect fled the store alongside a 21-year-old woman who had been waiting outside. Surveillance cameras captured the pair running towards the Surry Hills Light Rail, with the suspect continuing to brandish the knife.
Police were quickly alerted and,within an hour – around 9:10 p.m. – located the suspect at a unit block on Belvoir Street. I’ve seen cases like this escalate quickly, and the rapid response from law enforcement was crucial.Tragic Outcome
Upon arrival, officers attempted to apprehend the suspect. Though, as they entered the hallway of the unit block, the man attempted to escape. the woman accompanying him allegedly tried to impede police by closing the unit door.
Sadly, the situation ended in tragedy. According to Acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner, the suspect ran to the back of the unit and jumped from a fifth-floor balcony. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
