Gentle Yoga for Back pain Relief: A Restorative Practice
Back pain can be debilitating, impacting your daily life and overall well-being. Fortunately, yoga offers a gentle and effective path to relief. This sequence focuses on releasing tension, improving spinal mobility, and promoting relaxation. It’s designed for all levels, so listen to your body and modify as needed.
Knees-to-Chest pose (Apanasana)
Begin by lying comfortably on your back.Gently draw your knees toward your chest, clasping your hands around your shins.
Rocking gently from side to side can provide a soothing massage for your lower back. Hold this pose for 5-10 breaths, focusing on releasing tension with each exhale.
Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana)
Extend your arms out to the sides in a “T” shape. Bend your knees and keep your feet flat on the floor.
Cross your right leg over your left, or keep legs together, and gently draw both knees toward your chest. Slowly lower your knees to the left side, keeping your shoulders grounded.
Hold for 8 deep breaths, allowing your spine to gently twist. Inhale to bring your knees back to center.Next, cross your left leg over your right and repeat on the other side for another 8 breaths. Remember to uncross and recross your legs with each side.
Constructive Rest (Supta Baddha Konasana Variation)
Bring your legs back through center and allow them to fall open to the sides. Let your knees gently drop toward the floor.
Bring your feet wide apart, allowing your knees to relax and fall open. This pose encourages natural spinal lengthening and releases tension in the hips and lower back.
Stay in Constructive Rest for as long as feels comfortable, even up to 10-15 minutes. Use this time to simply breathe and allow your body to fully relax.
Crucial Considerations:
