The Unfolding Tragedy: Protecting Journalists in the Israel-Gaza Conflict
The escalating violence in the Israel-Gaza conflict has created an unprecedented crisis for journalists, resulting in a devastating loss of life. As of late 2023/early 2024, at least 189 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Other organizations report even higher numbers – the Gaza Media Center and Palestinian media groups cite 238, while the UN human rights office records 247. This represents the single greatest tragedy to befall the journalism profession in modern history.
The sheer scale of these losses is deeply alarming.It fuels outrage within the industry and a renewed commitment to honoring, acknowledging, and remembering every journalist lost, irrespective of location. But grief is quickly turning to anger – an anger that demands accountability and an end to the systemic targeting of those who bring truth to light.
A Pattern of Impunity
This isn’t a new phenomenon. For decades, israel has faced criticism for a lack of accountability in cases involving the deaths of journalists. Before the current war, CPJ documented 20 instances as 2001 where the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were implicated in the killing of journalists. Notably, this includes the 2022 killing of Al-Jazeera Arabic correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh – and in none of these cases was anyone held responsible.
This longstanding impunity appears to have emboldened the IDF. Recently, the IDF has openly admitted to directly targeting journalists, a clear violation of international law and a potential war crime. The most recent exmaple is the death of Al-Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif and five of his colleagues.
Here’s a breakdown of the escalating situation:
October 7, 2023 – Present: At least 26 journalists are believed to have been deliberately targeted. The actual number is likely higher. Prior to October 7, 2023: 20 documented cases of IDF involvement in journalist deaths with zero accountability.
Recent Admissions: The IDF has acknowledged directly targeting journalists, signaling a perilous escalation.
The Global Implications of Targeting the Press
States that deliberately target journalists frequently enough exhibit a broader disregard for essential human rights. You’ll find these nations consistently grouped with Saudi Arabia, Iran, Venezuela, China, and North Korea – a list no country wants to be on. Israel now risks aligning itself with this company, and must take immediate steps to restore trust and demonstrate a commitment to press freedom.
The targeting of journalists isn’t simply an attack on individuals; it’s an attack on the public’s right to know. When journalists are silenced, accountability is diminished, and the truth becomes a casualty of conflict.
What You Can Do & Why We Won’t Be Silent
We, as journalists and advocates for press freedom, recognize that expecting justice in these situations may be unrealistic. Though, that will not deter us from demanding it. We will continue to:
Document every incident: Meticulously record all cases of violence against journalists.
Advocate for independent investigations: Push for thorough and impartial investigations into the deaths of journalists.
Demand accountability: Hold perpetrators accountable for their actions under international law. Support journalists on the ground: Provide resources and assistance to journalists working in dangerous environments.
