Red Sox Anticipate Wilyer Abreu’s Return, Roman Anthony Remains Out
The Boston Red Sox are poised to welcome back a key player as right fielder Wilyer Abreu nears full recovery from a right calf strain. Initially expected to miss around ten days after exiting a game against the Marlins on August 17th, Abreu’s return is now imminent, offering a meaningful boost to a Red Sox offense that has felt his absence.
Abreu’s recovery couldn’t come at a better time, especially with Roman Anthony also sidelined due to a left oblique strain as september 3rd. The team has noticeably struggled with both players unavailable.
Manager Alex Cora provided a positive update before Thursday’s series finale against the athletics. He stated Abreu will remain in Boston while the team travels to Tampa, and will undergo a rigorous workout Friday, including running the bases.
“He’s feeling a lot better,” Cora confirmed, adding that a decision on activation will be made after assessing Friday’s workout. If all goes well, Abreu is expected to join the team in Tampa.
Potential Return timeline:
* Saturday or Sunday: Possible return against the Tampa Bay Rays.
* Tuesday: Potential debut of the three-game series in Toronto.
Beyond his offensive contributions, Abreu’s defensive prowess is highly valued. He earned a Gold Glove Award in his rookie season and continues to be a standout defender in the challenging right field at Fenway Park.
Cora emphasized Abreu’s all-around impact, stating, “I think in the lineup and defensively…we’re talking about the best defensive right fielder in the league.” He also highlighted the synergy when Abreu plays alongside Duran and Rafaela, calling it “game-changing.”
The manager also noted the team misses Abreu’s power hitting, hoping he quickly regains his timing and adds some much-needed home run potential to the lineup.
However, fans hoping for a speedy return from Roman Anthony will have to wait longer. Anthony is unlikely to return until the postseason, should the Red Sox qualify.
Currently, Anthony is focusing on low-impact exercises, including treadmill walking and stationary bike work, as he continues his rehabilitation.
Ultimately, the impending return of Wilyer Abreu injects optimism into the Red Sox lineup and defence. You can expect a noticeable impact as he rejoins the team, providing a spark both at the plate and in the field.
