Pope Leo XIV Urges Ceasefire and Expresses Hope for Gaza Peace Plan
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, recently reiterated his urgent call for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict and the safe return of all hostages held by Hamas as October 7, 2023. While acknowledging the organizers’ compassionate desire to address the “true humanitarian emergency” in Gaza, the Pope simultaneously voiced concerns about potential escalation. He understands the urgency of the situation, but fears the possibility of violence.
Italy’s government has cautioned flotilla organizers that Israel might consider their actions a “opposed act.” Consequently, they have urged a halt to the mission. As an alternative, Italy has proposed utilizing Cyprus as a delivery point, with assurances from the Catholic Church to facilitate aid distribution to Palestinians.
