The UK government is making a notable move to decentralize its thriving tech sector, announcing 14 “Regional Tech Booster” projects backed by a £1 million investment. * wales: Tramshed Tech’s AI innovation Challenge: Focusing on building AI capability and driving innovation throughout Wales, this project aims to equip businesses and individuals with the skills and resources needed to leverage the power of artificial intelligence.
* Scotland: ScotlandIS’s Future Ready in Scotland: Addressing a critical challenge for rural and remote tech founders – access to opportunities – this initiative will create peer networks and support systems to bridge the gap between isolated innovators and the resources they need to thrive.
* Northern Ireland: Tech NI Advocates & AwakenHub’s Activate AI Pilot: this program specifically targets under-represented founders and SMEs, aiming to boost AI adoption and productivity within these crucial segments of the Northern Irish economy.
* East Midlands: Allia Impact’s Building a tech 4 good ecosystem pilot: This project is building a comprehensive support pipeline for tech companies focused on social impact, from initial prototyping to securing funding and scaling operations.
* West Midlands: TN Naija‘s build here, Bridge Beyond: Recognizing the valuable contributions of immigrant entrepreneurs, this program provides targeted support to help them scale their businesses both locally and globally. This is notably vital given the increasing role of immigrant-founded companies in driving innovation.
* East of England: Tech East’s ACT Catalyst Pilot: Raising awareness and driving adoption of cutting-edge technologies like 5G, 6G, AI integration, and quantum communications among startups, scaleups, and even non-tech SMEs.
* Leeds & West Yorkshire: Leeds Digital Startup Studio: Leveraging a peer-to-peer learning model to support at least 30 early-stage and scaling tech businesses, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for growth.
* Sheffield & South Yorkshire: Sheffield Digital Limited’s Pathways off the Plateau scaleup programme: Providing targeted support and bespoke action plans to help established digital businesses overcome plateaus and achieve further growth.
* Plymouth: Digital Plymouth’s Beyond Boundaries Pilot: Addressing systemic gaps in early-stage support within Plymouth’s tech ecosystem through a focused pre-accelerator program.
* Brighton & Sussex: Plus X Brighton & Sussex Innovation Center’s Brighton and Sussex Innovation Partnership for Scale Up Growth: Strengthening the regional innovation ecosystem and unlocking growth across diverse sectors through a collaborative initiative.
National Investment Corridors: Connecting Regional Hubs
Beyond the individual projects, the Regional Tech Booster program is also establishing “National Investment Corridors.” The first two events are planned for Bristol and Leeds later this year, designed to connect regional tech hubs with investors and facilitate the flow of capital outside of London.
