Davies Secures Shot Put Bronze, Eyes Record at LA 2028 Paralympics
Great BritainS dan Davies has claimed a bronze medal in the F63 shot put at the recent championships, marking a triumphant return after years battling injury. His throw of 14.22m secured the third spot on the podium, a testament to his resilience and dedication.
This victory is especially meaningful considering Davies’ recent struggles and the rising competition from athletes like Faisal Sorour. He acknowledged the challenge, stating he hadn’t been able to fully respond to Sorour’s progress in recent years, but feels a resurgence of form.
Sorour ultimately took gold with a throw of 15.31m,repeating his success from the Paris Paralympics last year. However, Davies’ performance signals a strong comeback and renewed determination.
Understanding the F63 Classification
For those unfamiliar, the F63 classification is specifically for athletes with a single leg amputation above the knee who compete using a prosthesis. This ensures fair competition based on functional ability.
Davies’ journey back to the top hasn’t been easy. He has been hampered by osteitis pubis, a painful condition affecting the groin, requiring surgery and a lengthy recovery.
“After last year’s heartbreak,the pain of the last four or five years with my injuries,and finally accepting that I needed to have a few repairs,” Davies explained. He underwent a hip reconstruction and was initially unsure if he could return to his previous level of performance.
Though, Davies has not only returned but rebuilt his strength and technique in relative solitude. He’s now focused on the future, specifically the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
“I’ve done that. I’ve come back, rebuilt in the silence and I’ve come here and competed again,” he said with conviction. “I’m building towards LA. I’m going to break my world record.”
Other british Successes at the Championships
Davies wasn’t the only Briton to shine. Victoria Levitt secured a silver medal in the T44 200m, achieving a personal best time of 27.46 seconds. The United states’ Annie Carey claimed gold in 27.31 seconds.
Unfortunately, Levitt’s teammate, Bebe Jackson, finished third but wasn’t awarded a bronze. The competition required a minimum of four athletes to award all three medals.
Great Britain’s Overall Performance
Great Britain concluded the championships with an notable haul of 25 medals. This included seven golds, five silvers, and thirteen bronzes, placing them seventh in the overall medal table.
Katie jones, head of Paralympic performance at UK Athletics, expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance. She highlighted the strong team spirit and the positive experience for all involved.
looking ahead, Jones emphasized that this is just the beginning of the cycle leading to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the European Championships.These events will provide opportunities for new athletes to emerge and build upon the successes achieved at the recent championships.
“We have had lots of athletes within the top eight, top four and within medals here,” Jones stated. “Moving on to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the European Championships will give us the chance to allow new athletes to come in and embed what they have achieved here.”
