WillPower Fund Joins Forces with MCS to Expand Support for Individuals with Disabilities in western Massachusetts
For families navigating the complexities of raising a child or supporting a loved one with disabilities, the financial burden of uncovered needs can be overwhelming.For over 15 years, the WillPower Foundation has been a vital lifeline in Western Massachusetts, stepping in where insurance falls short. Now, through a strategic partnership with MCS (Mental Health & Community Services), the WillPower Foundation’s impactful work will be amplified, ensuring long-term sustainability and reaching even more individuals and families in need.
A Legacy of “Saying Yes When Insurance Says No”
Founded in 2008 by maria and Craig Burke in honor of their son, William Michael Burke, who lives with schizencephaly, a rare brain malformation, the WillPower Foundation was born from a deeply personal understanding of the gaps in support available to families. The foundation quickly became known for its commitment to funding essential items and services – mobility aids, therapeutic programs, sensory equipment – that dramatically improve quality of life but are often deemed “non-covered” by insurance. To date, WillPower has awarded nearly $500,000 in direct grants to individuals and families across Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties.
Navigating Challenges and Securing the Future
Like many non-profits, WillPower faced notable challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitating staff reductions to maintain financial stability. Despite these hurdles, the foundation’s dedicated board, volunteers, and generous donors allowed it to continue its vital work.Tho, the long-term viability of operating without dedicated staff prompted the board to proactively explore solutions that would ensure the mission’s enduring impact.
This led to a thoughtful and strategic decision: to partner with MCS, a leading provider of services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Western and Central Massachusetts as 1979. Effective october 1st, the WillPower Foundation transitioned to a donor-advised fund hosted by MCS.

What This Means for Families Seeking Support
The transition to MCS will enhance the WillPower Fund’s ability to serve the community. Families can continue to apply for grants of up to $750 per year to cover expenses not reimbursed by insurance. The application process remains intentionally low-barrier, requiring only a simple application and a letter of support from a professional familiar with the applicant’s needs. Grant cycles will continue to be offered multiple times annually.

The Friends of WillPower: Continuing the Community Spirit
the spirit of community that fueled WillPower’s success will continue through a newly formed “Friends of WillPower” fundraising group, comprised of dedicated volunteers. This group will host community events and fundraising initiatives to ensure the fund remains well-resourced and able to meet the evolving needs of the community.

The WillPower Foundation was recognized as a BusinessWest Difference Maker in 2018, an award symbolized by a butterfly – representing the “butterfly effect,” the idea that small acts of kindness can create significant, far-reaching change. This principle remains central to the WillPower Fund’s mission.
