Sam Fender’s ‘People Watching’ Claims the 2025 Mercury Prize
Sam Fender has been crowned the winner of the 2025 Mercury Prize,a prestigious recognition of British and Irish musical talent. His critically acclaimed album, People Watching, secured the top spot during a landmark ceremony held in newcastle – the first time the event has ventured outside of London.
Jubilant scenes unfolded as the North Shields native, Fender, emerged victorious against a formidable lineup. Competitors included iconic Britpop group Pulp, rising Irish artist CMAT, and the acclaimed post-punk band Fontaines DC.
Lauren Laverne expertly hosted the evening, building anticipation throughout the event. Judge Sian eleri ultimately announced Fender’s win at the Utilita Arena, following captivating performances from several nominees like FKA Twigs and the legendary Martin Carthy.
eleri explained the jury’s decision,highlighting the album’s remarkable qualities. “After much hard discussion, we decided on one album that stood out for its cohesion, character, and ambition.”
She further emphasized the album’s lasting impact. “It felt like a classic album, one that will take pride of place in record collections for years to come.”
A Personal Victory and Touching Dedication
Accepting the coveted prize, fender graciously acknowledged the strength of his fellow nominees. He expressed his honor in being “in great company” with such talented artists.
however, the moment became deeply emotional as Fender dedicated the award to a profoundly influential figure in his life. He honored his late friend and mentor, Annie Orwin, the inspiration behind the album’s poignant title track, People Watching.
Fender shared heartfelt words, expressing gratitude he hadn’t previously conveyed. “I want to just say thank you as I never did to the person, the song that People Watching is about.”
He continued, his voice filled with emotion, “I want to dedicate it to Annie Orwin who’s up there.”
Fender expressed his regional pride. “That’s all I’ve got thank you, and I love, this region is the best region in the country.”

Pulp previously secured the prize in 1996 with their seminal album, Different Class. Wolf Alice earned their first Mercury Prize in 2018 for Visions Of A Life.
