Japan is actively strengthening its position as a global film hub, forging new international collaborations and showcasing a diverse range of projects at key industry events like TIFFCOM and the Tokyo Gap Financing Market (TGFM). Until recently, Italy’s involvement in Japanese international co-productions was limited. However, a recent agreement has sparked immediate interest, demonstrating the potential for fruitful partnerships. Spotlight on Italian Cinema at TGFM
This year’s TGFM is placing a particular focus on italian projects.Three promising projects,selected through Cinecitta and Italy’s Ministry of Culture,will be presented to potential investors and collaborators.
TGFM: A Platform for Emerging Talent
In total, TGFM will feature 23 projects this year, representing a broad spectrum of international cinema. Notably, the lineup includes compelling works from southeast Asia:
* Four Seasons In Java (Indonesia), directed by Kamila Andini.
* 1982 (Vietnam), directed by Diep Nguyen Hoang.
* Filipinana (Philippines), directed by Rafael Manuel.
* Hum (Philippines), directed by Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan and produced by Alemberg Ang.
Success Stories from Previous Years
TGFM has a proven track record of launching prosperous projects. Last year’s showcase included Morte Cucina by Pen-ek, currently competing at TIFF. Additionally, Dear Stranger, a co-production involving Japan, France, the U.S., and the UK, premiered at Busan and will be screened at TIFF’s Nippon Cinema Now section.
TIFFCOM: Exploring Animation and Global Trends
Alongside TGFM, TIFFCOM’s seminar program offers valuable insights into the evolving landscape of the film industry. This year’s sessions will delve into:
* Animation: Featuring industry veterans like Raman Hui (shrek The third, Monster Hunt) and Samuel Choy (Bliss Concepts, McDull franchise).
* International Expansion: Discussions with leading Japanese broadcasters – TBS,Nippon TV,NHK,Asahi Television,and Wowow – on their global strategies.
* Remakes & Series: Focus on Turkish remakes, the rising popularity of Thai BL and GL series, and the growing demand for Chinese drama productions.
Navigating Film Policy and Industry Challenges
The Motion Picture Association is hosting a crucial seminar addressing Japan’s film policy. Experts like Schuyler Weiss (Elvis producer), Eriko Miyagawa (Shogun producer), Apinat ’Ob’ Siricharoenjit (Living Films), and Junko Kusunoki (Film Solutions) will share their perspectives.

TIFFCOM will be held from october 29-31 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center in Hamamatsucho. It’s conveniently located near the Tokyo International Film Festival’s venues in Hibiya-ginza, which runs from October 27 to November 5.
