investing in Resilience: The Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund – A Progress Report
The Ukrainian tech ecosystem has demonstrated remarkable fortitude in the face of unprecedented challenges. At Google, we recognized early on the critical need to support the country’s innovative entrepreneurs. This commitment began in March 2022 with the launch of the first Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund, and has continued to evolve based on the changing needs of the market.
Doubling Down on Ukraine’s Future
Our initial $5 million fund provided vital, equity-free cash awards to 58 startups. Witnessing the incredible resilience and growth of Ukrainian innovation, we announced a second fund in 2024, doubling our investment to $10 million. This announcement, made alongside President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Google CEO Sundar Pichai in Munich, underscored our long-term dedication to the Ukrainian tech landscape.
The second fund was expertly operated by 1991 Accelerator,Ukraine’s leading accelerator, ensuring effective reach and support for participating startups. We’re now pleased to share a comprehensive update on the second fund’s impact, spanning 2024-2025.
From Survival to cutting-Edge Innovation: A Program Overview
The response to the second fund was overwhelming. We received over 1,700 applications, meticulously reviewing each one through more than 300 interviews. Ultimately, we selected 98 promising startups to join the program across four cohorts.
Each selected startup received:
* Up to $100,000 in non-dilutive funding: Providing crucial runway for growth and development.
* Dedicated mentorship: Connecting founders with experienced industry leaders.
* Up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits: Empowering them to leverage world-class infrastructure.
A Shift in Focus: Addressing new Challenges
The nature of innovation within the Ukrainian startup scene has evolved substantially. While the 2022 fund primarily supported companies focused on immediate survival needs, the 2024 cohort showcased a surge in startups tackling complex, forward-looking challenges driven by the ongoing conflict.
We observed a notable increase in innovation within these key areas:
* Security: Developing solutions to protect critical infrastructure and data.
* Countering Disinformation: Building tools to combat the spread of false narratives.
* Health & Medtech: Addressing urgent healthcare needs and improving patient outcomes.
* Advanced Demining Technologies: Pioneering safer and more efficient landmine removal solutions.
The Rise of AI in Ukraine
Perhaps the most striking trend was the dramatic increase in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-first companies. AI, once an emerging field among applicants in 2022, became a dominant force in 2024, with startups leveraging its power to solve complex global problems.
Deus Robotics (https://deusrobotics.com/) exemplifies this shift. Originally a robotics company, Deus Robotics has strategically pivoted to focus on an AI platform that seamlessly orchestrates robots from any manufacturer. This intelligent system is transforming warehouse operations, delivering up to 300% efficiency gains for major logistics firms.
Demonstrating Real-World Impact
The impact of the Google for Startups Ukraine Support Fund extends far beyond initial funding. These startups are achieving significant milestones and attracting further investment.
Here’s a snapshot of their progress:
