Colts Cornerback Gardner Avoids Major Injury, But Faces Recovery Period
A collective sigh of relief swept through the Indianapolis Colts institution Monday as initial fears surrounding cornerback JuJu Gardner‘s injury proved unfounded. Gardner sustained an injury during the first defensive series of Sunday’s game against the Houston texans, immediately raising concerns about a potential Achilles tear.
Fortunately, subsequent examination revealed the Achilles is intact. However, Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen confirmed Gardner will still be sidelined for an undetermined period. “His Achilles is good to go, but he’ll probably miss some time,” steichen stated, adding he currently doesn’t have a precise timeline for his return.
Initial Concerns & Current Status
Initially unable to walk without assistance, gardner was later seen moving gingerly on his own after the game. While placing him on injured reserve – requiring a minimum four-game absence – isn’t currently being considered, the team will carefully manage his recovery. The Colts (8-4) are firmly in the AFC playoff hunt, making every game crucial.
Gardner’s absence significantly impacts the Colts’ defensive strategy. The team had planned to utilize Gardner alongside fellow standout cornerback Charvarius Ward in designated roles on either side of the field. This plan was disrupted by the injury, forcing Ward to adapt and shadow Houston’s top receiver, Nico Collins, throughout the game.
Ward Steps Up, Acknowledges Challenges
Ward readily admitted the adjustment wasn’t seamless. “Just having to rise to the occasion,” he said. “I don’t think I played well… I’ll get better, though.” Collins ultimately finished with five receptions for 98 yards.
This was only the second game featuring both Gardner and Ward in the Colts’ secondary, with Ward recently returning from his own stint on injured reserve. The timing of Gardner’s injury was particularly unfortunate, disrupting the growth of this key defensive pairing.
Impact on the Colts’ Playoff Push
You can expect the Colts to carefully evaluate thier cornerback depth and potentially adjust their defensive schemes in Gardner’s absence. Maintaining a strong pass defense is vital as thay navigate the final five games of the regular season and strive for a playoff berth.
Gardner himself expressed his frustration at being unable to contribute to Sunday’s 20-16 loss.”Just wishing I could be out there,” he shared.
The Colts will continue to monitor Gardner’s progress and provide updates as they become available. For now,the focus remains on supporting his recovery and finding ways to compensate for his absence on the field.
