The impetus for this ambitious undertaking stems from the heartbreaking outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 at the existing, aging Soldiers’ Home, which tragically claimed the lives of dozens of veterans. The new facility, a $300 million project, is a direct response, built with lessons learned and a dedication to preventing such a catastrophe from ever happening again.
Designed for Wellbeing: A Focus on Comfort and community
The new Holyoke Soldiers’ Home isn’t simply about replacing old infrastructure. It’s about reimagining veteran care. “The space for veterans is great,” explains administrator Val Lazo. “Each veteran has a good-sized room, and there’s plenty of activity space, both on the first floor and also in each individual unit.” This emphasis on both privacy and communal engagement is central to the design philosophy.
Each floor will feature dedicated activity areas, thoughtfully curated to cater to diverse interests. Imagine an exercise bike and light weights on one floor, alongside an arts and crafts space on another – encouraging movement and social interaction. This intentional design promotes a vibrant community atmosphere,allowing veterans to easily pursue hobbies and connect with peers.
Central to this community focus is the “great room,” a large gathering space equipped with a stunning 90-inch television. This area will host everything from holiday celebrations to Super Bowl parties, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging.
A Detailed Look Inside: Modern amenities and Thoughtful Design
A recent tour of the facility, currently under construction, revealed a commitment to detail and resident comfort. Resident rooms are spacious - 12 by 16 feet – and feature large windows,accessible bathrooms with walk-in showers,ample built-in storage,and dedicated desk space. These aren’t institutional rooms; they’re designed to feel like home.
The facility also includes a chapel, administrative spaces, and expansive common areas boasting panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Tim Senecal, General Supervisor with Commodore walsh Holyoke (the construction joint venture), highlighted the challenges overcome during construction, from foundation excavation to the intricate brickwork and the notable Goshen stone retaining wall.
The design incorporates elements from the newer Veterans’ home at Chelsea, while maintaining a distinct identity shaped by input from current Holyoke Soldiers’ Home staff. This collaborative approach ensures the new facility truly meets the needs of its residents.
Phased Transition and a Timeline for Completion
The transition to the new facility will be carefully phased, beginning next September. The first 24 residents will move from the fourth floor of the existing building to the third floor of the new one. Subsequent moves will occur in groups of roughly 20, culminating with the memory care residents.
Lazo aims to have all residents relocated by February 2027. This 16-month period will undoubtedly be demanding for staff, requiring the simultaneous operation of both facilities. The complete project, including the demolition of the current Soldiers’ Home, is slated for completion by mid-2028.
