Pakistan Prioritizes Energy Security & Advancement: Gwadar, Gilgit-baltistan Receive Major Investment Boost
Islamabad, December 9th, 2025 – In a decisive move to bolster national economic growth and regional development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has spearheaded a series of initiatives focused on strengthening Pakistan’s power infrastructure and accelerating key development projects. Recent directives emphasize a commitment to reliable, affordable energy access, especially in strategically vital regions like Gwadar and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), alongside a broader push for transparent and efficient project execution nationwide.
Addressing Gwadar’s Power Needs: A Extensive Plan for Enduring Growth
Recognizing the critical role of uninterrupted power supply in unlocking Gwadar’s potential as a major economic hub, the Prime Minister has approved the immediate implementation of a comprehensive plan to resolve existing issues impacting the port city. This commitment stems from a clear understanding that a robust energy infrastructure is fundamental to attracting investment and fostering economic activity.
“Uninterrupted electricity supply in Gwadar will certainly enhance national economic activity and investment,” stated the Prime minister, emphasizing the need for electricity standards that meet both regional and international benchmarks for industries and investors.
The plan, outlined during a high-level meeting, includes both short-term and long-term solutions.Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari reported a 42% reduction in power supply disruptions in Gwadar thanks to recent ministry actions. Further stabilization of voltage levels is targeted within the next six months. Specific projects include:
* Short-Term (8-12 months): Installation of 9.7 megawatts of solar capacity across major government institutions.
* Long-Term: A 40-megawatt project designed to ensure a sustainable power supply for Gwadar’s growing needs.
These initiatives are crucial given projected electricity demand increases of 30% in the coming years, driven by ongoing industrial expansion, port development, and urban growth. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to future-proofing Gwadar’s energy infrastructure.
Gilgit-Baltistan to Benefit from 100MW Solar Initiative: A leap Towards Clean Energy & Regional Prosperity
Simultaneously, the Prime Minister has prioritized the energy needs of Gilgit-Baltistan, directing the immediate initiation of a 100-megawatt solar project. This ambitious undertaking is designed to provide uninterrupted, sustainable, and environmentally pleasant electricity to the region.
the project is structured around two key components:
* 18-Megawatt Rooftop Solar Program: Leveraging existing infrastructure for distributed generation.
* 82-Megawatt Utility-Scale Solar Project: A large-scale installation to significantly increase overall capacity.
Expected to be completed by 2027, the project represents a significant investment in GB’s economic development.Joint efforts between the GB government and the Ministry of Energy are projected to generate annual savings of Rs1 billion for the government. The GB government has pledged to ensure timely provision of land, communications, infrastructure, and other necessary facilities to facilitate the project’s prosperous implementation.
“The welfare and economic development of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan is among the top priorities of the federal government,” the Prime Minister affirmed, highlighting the government’s dedication to promoting industrial activity, investment, and economic growth in the region.
Nationwide Development: A Focus on Transparency and Efficiency
Beyond specific regional projects, Prime Minister Shehbaz underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to the transparent and timely completion of nationally significant development projects. He announced the formation of a steering committee, personally chaired, comprising federal and provincial stakeholders, to oversee a comprehensive reform strategy covering all stages of project development – from approval and planning to procurement and human resource deployment.
This initiative signals a strong intent to address systemic challenges that have historically hampered project execution. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the support and technical assistance provided by international development partners, including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in driving these crucial reforms.
Attracting Investment in Pakistan’s Healthcare Sector
In a separate meeting, the Prime Minister engaged with a delegation of Pakistani-origin doctors residing in the US, lead by Dr. Samir Shafi. He directed the Ministry of Economic Affairs to develop a comprehensive roadmap for investment in Pakistan’s healthcare sector, in direct consultation with the physicians. The focus is on resolving obstacles to investment and facilitating the contributions of Pakistani doctors living abroad.
