peter Gabriel’s “I Have the Touch” Finds New Life in a Ping-Pong Epic
Peter Gabriel is delighted to see one of his deeper cuts experiencing a resurgence, adn for a rather unique reason. His 1982 track, ”I Have the Touch,” plays a key role in the upcoming film Marty Supreme, a ping-pong centered story starring Timothée Chalamet and Shark Tank personality Kevin O’Leary.
Gabriel expressed his gratitude to director Josh Safdie for selecting the song, noting it’s not often chosen for prominent placements. He shared on his official website that “I Have the Touch,” featuring the iconic bass work of Tony Levin, doesn’t frequently get asked for a dance.
A Soundtrack Rooted in Bath
Interestingly, the film’s soundtrack boasts a geographical connection beyond just the ping-pong action. Marty Supreme also features “Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime” by The Korgis and “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears. Gabriel pointed out that all three songs were writen and recorded in and around the city of Bath, England.
This unexpected sonic trifecta adds another layer of intrigue to the film. It’s a testament to the enduring quality of these 80s synth-pop anthems.
Gabriel’s Backstage Tradition & A Hopeful wait
For those familiar with Gabriel’s touring life, a ping-pong table isn’t a new sight. He maintains a table backstage at his concerts for band and crew to enjoy. He’s eagerly awaiting the film’s release during the Christmas holiday season, hoping to experience it on the big screen.
The buzz surrounding Marty Supreme is palpable, and Gabriel is clearly excited to see his music contribute to the atmosphere. It begs the question: will other, perhaps less-known, Gabriel tracks find their way into future film projects?
Perhaps a director will soon recognize the cinematic potential of “Carpet Crawlers.” Only time will tell. But for now, celebrate the unexpected revival of “I Have the Touch” and the exciting soundtrack of Marty Supreme.
