A Rockette’s Remarkable Return: Balancing Motherhood and the Christmas Stunning
The Radio City Christmas spectacular is a holiday tradition for millions. But behind the dazzling precision and iconic high kicks, lie stories of unbelievable dedication and resilience. Silver, a former Rockette, faced a unique challenge when she discovered she was pregnant during the 2015 season. She strategically planned, hoping to welcome her child in a timeframe that would allow a return to the stage. “I knew that if I had the baby in August or July, that I could go back the next season,” she explained.
However, the path back wasn’t straightforward.Rockettes undergo annual auditions, meaning Silver had to try out again while seven and a half months pregnant.It was a daunting prospect,but one she embraced with determination. “It literally was a game day decision, but I knew if I wanted to be offered a contract, I had to show up,” she recalled.
Her husband’s encouragement proved pivotal, and she traveled to Radio City for the May audition. Remarkably, she landed the coveted spot once more. Silver attributes her calm demeanor during the audition to her motivation.”I have to tell you I have never felt more calm in an audition and I think it’s because I knew I had to be for my baby,” she said.
The support from her fellow Rockettes was palpable. “And what was so beautiful about that audition was - you hear it in the video – the Rockettes cheering me on,” she fondly remembers.
On August 1, 2016, Silver welcomed her daughter, Amanda, who is now a promising young ballerina at Manhattan Youth Ballet. Just nine weeks later, she was back in rehearsals for the Christmas show. The return was physically demanding.”On that first day,I was like,’Whoa,I wasn’t expecting this to be this hard.’ And I was pumping [milk] on every break,” she shared with a laugh.
That season marked her final performance with the Rockettes, as she and her husband decided to expand their family, eventually welcoming Molly, 7, and Ving, 4.
Today, Silver channels her passion and energy into Tribe by Alina, a fitness community dedicated to empowering women. Her story recently gained renewed attention thanks to a shout-out from kylie Kelce, wife of NFL star Jason kelce, on her podcast, “Not Gonna Lie.”
Kelce was particularly impressed by Silver’s seemingly effortless high kick while pregnant and her bold choice of attire. “Wearing gray pants when you’re kicking that high, risky business. If you pee a little, everyone’s gonna know. It’s remarkable,” Kelce playfully remarked.
Silver found the attention amusing. “Honestly, I think that maybe those grey leggings went more viral than I did,” she laughed.
