New Zealand Animal Shelters Prepare for a Busy Holiday Season

As most New Zealanders anticipate a relaxing summer break,animal shelters nationwide are preparing for their most demanding period of the year. Helping You Help Animals (HUHA), a prominent animal welfare charity, is gearing up to care for approximately 600 animals at its Haywards Hill facility near Wellington.
HUHA’s founder and CEO, Carolyn Press McKenzie, emphasizes the diversity of animals under their care. They provide sanctuary not only for common pets like cats and dogs, but also for a wide range of rural animals, including pigs, cows, and sheep, alongside birds and native wildlife.
A Story of Second Chances
Recently, HUHA intervened to save a pregnant chihuahua facing euthanasia due to her owners’ inability to afford a necessary C-section. Thanks to successful crowdfunding, both the mother and her puppies are now safe and will spend Christmas at the shelter before finding their forever homes.
The Power of Volunteers & Dedicated Staff
Typically,around 200 volunteers contribute their time,often dedicating a weekly or fortnightly shift. Some volunteers prefer assisting with HUHA’s op shops, while others directly support animal care. With a core team of 20 staff members, the institution relies heavily on volunteer support to manage the overwhelming workload.

A “Revolving Door” of Needs
Press McKenzie acknowledges the holiday season creates a “revolving door” effect, with animals constantly arriving and departing. Increased interest in adopting dogs during the summer months, coupled with kitten season, typically leads to more adoptions.
however, economic pressures and changing life circumstances also contribute to an influx of animals needing shelter. Unfortunately, unplanned litters due to a lack of desexing further exacerbate the situation, placing additional strain on resources.

If you’re considering adding a pet to yoru family this summer, Press McKenzie urges you to prioritize responsible adoption.
Here’s what you should do:
* Commit to a Lifetime of Care: Ensure you can provide for your new companion’s needs throughout their entire life.
* Understand the Animal’s Needs: Thoroughly research the specific breed or species you’re considering.
* Consult with Shelters: Leverage the expertise of shelter staff to find the perfect match for your lifestyle.
* Do Your Research: Understand the financial and time commitments involved in pet ownership.
“Just be a good parent,” Press McKenzie advises. “Truly understand the animal you’re adopting and give them the life they deserve.”
