Springfield Thunderbirds Champion Inclusive Hockey with sixth Annual Sensory-Friendly Game
Springfield, MA – The Springfield Thunderbirds are once again demonstrating their commitment to community and inclusivity with their sixth annual Sensory-Friendly Game, scheduled for sunday, December 28th at 3:05 p.m. against the Bridgeport Islanders at the MassMutual Center.This event, a collaborative effort with the Center for Human Growth (CHD) and Springfield College’s Occupational Therapy department, provides a welcoming and accessible hockey experience for individuals and families sensitive to the typical sensory stimulation of a live game.
A Growing Tradition rooted in Accessibility
Since its inception in 2020, the Sensory-Friendly Game has become a cornerstone of the Thunderbirds’ community outreach.Recognizing that the vibrant atmosphere of a hockey game – with its loud noises, radiant lights, and sudden shifts in energy – can be overwhelming for some, the Thunderbirds partnered with CHD to create a more inclusive surroundings.This initiative isn’t simply about accommodating needs; it’s about ensuring everyone has the possibility to experience the thrill of live hockey.
“What began as a single,intentional step toward inclusivity has grown into one of the most meaningful traditions in our institution,” says Nathan Costa,Thunderbirds President. “We’ve seen this game evolve, welcoming more families and creating a space where everyone can enjoy T-Birds hockey on their own terms. This growth is a testament to the dedication of our partners at CHD and Springfield College, whose expertise has been invaluable.”
What Makes the Sensory-Friendly Game different?
The Thunderbirds go beyond simply acknowledging sensory sensitivities; they actively mitigate potential triggers. Key features of the Sensory-Friendly Game include:
* Reduced Stimulation: Lowered goal horn volume, minimized noise meters, and decreased microphone and music levels create a calmer auditory environment.
* Visual Comfort: The elimination of strobing lights and consistent lighting throughout the game and pre-game periods reduce visual stress.
* Dedicated Quiet Zones: Two “cool down stations” are strategically located on the concourse and main entry level,offering quiet,safe spaces away from the excitement of the seating bowl.
* Supportive Resources: A “sensory story” booklet and other helpful materials are available to prepare guests for the game experience and provide coping strategies.
* Sensory Bags Available at All Games: Building on the success of the Sensory-Friendly Game, sensory bags sponsored by MAACO Collision repair & Auto Painting are now available at all Thunderbirds home games, providing ongoing support for fans with sensitivities.
Expert Collaboration & Hands-On Learning
The success of this initiative is deeply rooted in the expertise of CHD and Springfield College’s Occupational Therapy department. CHD’s commitment to community engagement and Springfield College’s practical,applied learning approach have been instrumental in shaping the Sensory-Friendly Game.

Springfield College’s Occupational Therapy students contribute directly to the event, gaining valuable real-world experience while providing support at the “cool down stations” with planned sensory-friendly activities.
“The Occupational Therapy program at springfield College is thrilled to be part of this initiative,” says Lori Vaughn, Professor of Occupational Therapy. “The game allows individuals with sensory sensitivities to participate fully in the Thunderbirds experience, and our students gain invaluable hands-on experience supporting children and families.”
A Commitment Beyond a Single Game
The Thunderbirds’ dedication to inclusivity extends beyond the Sensory-Friendly Game. Their long-standing partnership with CHD, dating back to 2016, includes the “Game Changer” award, recognizing local residents making a positive impact in the Western Massachusetts community.
