Times Square to Host Historic Mid-Summer Ball Drop & Kick Off Year-Long 250th Anniversary Celebrations
Times Square is gearing up for a year unlike any other, marked by a historic first: a second New Year’s Eve-style ball drop on July 3rd. This unprecedented event, alongside a nationwide initiative, aims to unite Americans as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026.
The Times Square Alliance is collaborating with one Times Square, the iconic building home to the conventional New Year’s Eve ball, to orchestrate these changes. According to Tom Harris, President of the Times Square Alliance, this is about more then just a party; it’s about building momentum for a notable national milestone.
A First in 120 Years: The July 3rd Ball Drop
For the first time in 120 years, Times Square will witness a ball drop outside of December 31st. This mid-summer celebration, mirroring the grandeur of the New Year’s Eve spectacle, is designed to generate excitement and participation in the upcoming anniversary events. “We’re going to do it in the same beautiful style that Times square knows how to do it,” explained Jeanette Rios, a spokesperson for the initiative.
A Legacy of Celebration: The Times Square Ball
The tradition of dropping a ball in Times square dates back to 1907. Initially, a 700-pound iron and wood sphere adorned with 100 light bulbs signaled the start of a new year.
Over the decades, the ball has evolved. Last year’s “Constellation Ball,” the ninth iteration, measured a substantial 12 feet in diameter and weighed nearly 12,000 pounds. It’s a testament to American ingenuity and a symbol of hope and renewal.
Interestingly, the ball drop was paused only during World War II, in 1942 and 1943. During those years,a “dimout” was enforced to protect the city from potential attacks. Rather of the ball, crowds observed a moment of silence followed by chimes from One Times Square.
America250: A National Call to service
The July 3rd ball drop will also serve as the official launch of america Gives, a national service initiative spearheaded by America250. This enterprising program aims to make 2026 the largest year for volunteerism in U.S. history.
Here’s how America250 plans to engage the nation:
* Cross-Country reach: Events will span from Guam to Alaska, Philadelphia to Fairbanks, ensuring nationwide participation.
* Rose Parade Presence: America250 will feature a float in the New Year’s Day Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, showcasing three bald eagles representing the nation’s past, present, and future.
* Community-Driven Approach: The initiative emphasizes grassroots involvement, encouraging local communities to shape the celebrations.
* Diverse Programming: A wide range of events are planned, including fireworks displays, potluck suppers, student contests, and oral history projects.
Uniting a Nation Through Shared Experiences
Organizers hope these celebrations will bridge political divides and foster a sense of national unity. Rios emphasizes the importance of offering diverse opportunities for participation. “If we can find something for everyone… having those menus of options that people can pick and choose how they want to participate,” she saeid, “That’s how we’re going to get to engaging 350 million Americans.”
President Donald Trump has also announced a complementary initiative, “Freedom 250,” to coordinate additional events for the anniversary.
Ultimately, the goal is to create a year-long celebration that resonates with all Americans, reminding us of our shared history and inspiring a brighter future. As Rios aptly put it, “We want to ring in this new year from sea to shining sea.”
