A Simple Yoga flow to Ground and Energize Your Day
Starting your day with even a short yoga practice can profoundly impact your physical and mental well-being. This sequence is designed to be accessible to all levels, offering a gentle yet invigorating experience. Let’s move through these poses, connecting breath to movement and cultivating a sense of calm focus.
Warming Up: Sun Salutation B Variation
This modified Sun Salutation B will prepare your body for deeper stretches. Remember to listen to your body and modify as needed.
- Begin in Mountain Pose, standing tall with your feet hip-width apart and your arms at your sides.
- Inhale deeply, and as you exhale, gently fold forward from your hips, keeping a slight bend in your knees.
- Inhale, reaching your arms up to the sky in Upward Salute, lengthening your spine.
- Exhale, and return to Mountain Pose.
High Lunge & Downward-Facing Dog
Now, we’ll add a little more dynamic movement.
- Lift your left leg to the sky on an inhalation.
- With an exhalation, step forward into a Low Lunge, ensuring your front knee is stacked over your ankle.
- When you feel stable, move your arms up into High Lunge, deepening the stretch in your hips and core.
- Take three full, conscious breaths here, feeling the expansion in your chest.
- With your next inhalation, move through a vinyasa (plank to chaturanga to upward-facing dog) or step straight back to Downward-Facing Dog.
Flowing Through the Sequence
Continue to synchronize your breath with each movement.
- From Downward-Facing Dog, walk, hop, or jump to the front of your mat.
- Inhale into Halfway Lift, lengthening your spine and gazing forward.
- Exhale into a forward fold, allowing your head to hang heavy.
- Inhale, reach your arms all the way up to the sky in Upward Salute.
- Exhale, and return to mountain Pose.
- Repeat this entire series – including High Lunge on both sides - two more times. This builds heat and increases flexibility.
Important Considerations for High Lunge
* Keep your front knee aligned over your ankle. Avoid letting it extend past your toes.
* Engage your core. This will help stabilize your hips and protect your lower back.
* Breathe deeply. Focus on filling your lungs completely with each inhale and exhale.
* Modify as needed. If High Lunge feels too intense, keep your hands on the floor or your front knee bent more deeply.
Closing: Savasana (Corpse Pose)
The final moments of your practice are just as critically important as the poses themselves.
- When you’ve completed the flow, gently come to a pleasant seated position or lie flat on your back in savasana.
- Allow your arms to rest at your sides, palms facing up.
- Close your eyes and soften your body, releasing any remaining tension.
- Enjoy 3-5 minutes of stillness, simply observing your breath and the sensations in your body.
- Honour yourself for taking the time to nurture your well-being today.
This simple flow is a wonderful way to start or end your day. Remember, yoga is not about achieving perfect poses, but about connecting with your body, breath, and inner self. Practice with kindness and compassion, and enjoy the journey.
