Next-level Adaptations: Which Video Games Are Primed for Hollywood Success?
The phenomenal success of The Last of Us and A Minecraft Movie has ignited a gold rush for video game intellectual property (IP) in Hollywood. Studios are actively seeking the next big franchise to adapt, but what games truly hold the potential for a blockbuster transformation?
Research firm Ampere Analysis has delved into the gaming world to pinpoint four titles poised for adaptation. Their analysis focuses on games with strong existing fanbases, recent releases, and uniquely compelling worlds.
The Frontrunners: four Games to Watch
Ampere identifies these games as especially ripe for adaptation:
* Baldur’s Gate III: This BAFTA 2024 best game winner boasts a rich narrative and dedicated player base.
* Black Myth: Wu Kong: Inspired by Chinese mythology, this action RPG offers a visually stunning and culturally rich setting.
* Hollow Knight: Silksong: The highly anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight promises a captivating world and challenging gameplay.
* Sons of the Forest: This survival horror game delivers a tense, immersive experience with a compelling premise.
These selections weren’t arbitrary. Ampere considered eight key characteristics, including a defined narrative, suitable adaptation style, franchise popularity, and potential audience reach.
A Growing Trend: The Rise of video Game Adaptations
Studios have already begun securing rights to major franchises, but significant untapped potential remains. According to Ronald Santa-Cruz, Research Manager and Games Subject Matter Expert at Ampere Analysis, “For studios willing to look beyond the usual suspects, there remains a strong pipeline of game IP that could translate into the next major transmedia success.”
Indeed, commissions for video game IP adaptations have increased by an extraordinary 30% as 2019. Major players like Warner Bros. Discovery,Paramount,Netflix,Comcast, and Amazon have already claimed rights to ten marquee franchises. Expect to see adaptations of Mortal Kombat,Street Fighter, and The Legend of Zelda in the near future.
The Shift Towards Live-Action
The market is clearly favoring live-action adaptations over animation. In 2025,a striking 69% of commissioned adaptations were live-action,more than double the previous year’s share. This trend is driven by the success of titles like The Last of us, which demonstrated the power of a faithful, high-quality live-action adaptation.
Notably, 18 new game adaptations were commissioned in the latter half of 2025 alone, with 78% of those being live-action projects. This indicates a strong and sustained commitment to bringing gaming worlds to life on the big and small screens.
Ultimately, the future of video game adaptations looks bright. As studios continue to explore the vast library of gaming IP, you can expect to see even more of your favorite games transformed into compelling cinematic experiences.
