Los Angeles’ ambitious public transportation plans are gaining momentum, with a significant step forward for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor project. After four years of environmental review, Metro staff are now advocating for a heavy rail subway too address congestion along the heavily trafficked 405 Freeway corridor. This advancement, as of January 12, 2026, signals a potential conversion in how Angelenos commute.
Sepulveda Transit Corridor: A New Era for LA Mobility
A crucial vote is scheduled for the Metro Board of Directors’ January meeting, where they will select a “locally preferred alternative” for the project. the initial phase, envisioned to connect Van Nuys and Westwood, is poised to become a reality with a recommended plan: a fully underground heavy rail line.I’ve found that underground options,while more expensive upfront,often minimize community disruption and offer long-term operational benefits.
This proposed route, a modified version of Alternative 5 from the project’s environmental impact report, will run between the Van Nuys Metrolink Station and the E Line’s Expo/Sepulveda Station. Interestingly, this revised plan shifts the route beneath van Nuys Boulevard, creating a more direct and streamlined path compared to the original proposal along Sepulveda Boulevard.
