A San Diego family is facing a deeply distressing situation after Rady Children’s Hospital unexpectedly canceled their teenager’s scheduled gender-affirming care, including a surgery anticipated within weeks. The family believes this decision stems from evolving policies influenced by federal discussions regarding funding for hospitals offering such services to minors.
Fifteen-year-old Enfys Zerlaut, who identifies as nonbinary, shared their journey of self-finding with their mother, Ann Zerlaut, approximately four years ago.
Ann Zerlaut recalls observing subtle indicators throughout her child’s upbringing. “There were always little clues,” she explained, “like a preference for traditionally ‘tomboyish’ activities and a discomfort with certain gendered expectations, such as the required dress for First Communion, which we navigated with a compromise.”
Zerlaut emphasized the strong, supportive relationship she shares with her child. “We’ve always fostered an environment of trust, where Enfys felt safe to express themselves authentically,” she stated.
Though, navigating the world outside their home proved more challenging for Enfys, who doesn’t identify within traditional gender binaries. This led the family to actively seek medical professionals and programs equipped to provide appropriate support.
“Within the transgender community, mental wellbeing is often a important concern,” Enfys explained. “It’s not inherent to being trans, but rather a consequence of societal perceptions and internal struggles. Access to gender-affirming care can profoundly impact how we perceive ourselves.”
The family initiated care at Rady Children’s Hospital roughly ten months ago, encompassing therapy sessions, consultations with endocrinologists, and surgical evaluations. Eventually, Enfys was scheduled to undergo a mastectomy.
“I felt an unprecedented level of happiness,” Enfys shared. “The advancement of breasts during puberty was something I never desired.”
This carefully planned path took an unexpected turn last week when Ann Zerlaut received a phone call from the hospital.
“I was fully taken aback,” she said, expressing her disbelief.
Zerlaut was informed that the appointment cancellation was a direct result of proposed federal measures to withhold funding from hospitals providing gender-affirming care to minors.
“Seeing Enfys so joyful, and then having that hope extinguished, was devastating,” Zerlaut recounted.
“The uncertainty was overwhelming,” Enfys added,”and the thought of facing the weekend with that news was unbearable.”
Despite the emotional hardship, the family remains resolute in their determination to advocate for Enfys and others facing similar obstacles.
“We’re unsure of what the future holds, but we’re committed to finding a surgical solution for Enfys,” Zerlaut stated. “This isn’t just about our fight; it’s about ensuring access to care for everyone who needs it.”
Enfys expressed a continuing commitment to their personal journey. “I may never fully reconcile my identity and presentation, but I will continue striving to be my most authentic self
