Indonesia’s Kominfo Investigates Meta Over Alleged Data Leak

Jakarta, Indonesia – January 16, 2026 – Indonesia’s Ministry of ​Communication and Digital⁤ Information (Kominfo) has requested a formal description from Meta, the parent ⁢company‍ of facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, regarding⁢ alleged user data breaches and reports of password reset requests.A ⁢clarification meeting was held on Wednesday, january 14, ​2026.

Meta’s Response

according to Alexander‍ Sabar, Director General ​of Digital Supervision at Kominfo, Meta explained that ‌the password reset process is an internal mechanism operating through Instagram’s official systems and does not expose passwords to external parties.

Regarding reports of data leaks⁣ from third-party sources,Instagram stated that an inquiry is underway to verify the validity of these claims.

“No ⁤user passwords can be accessed or obtained by anyone other than the account⁤ owner themselves,and there is no indication that the password reset feature was misused to collect data by external parties. The⁣ investigation is ongoing, and the results will be‌ used for further evaluation,” ‌Sabar stated in a written ⁤statement on Friday, January 16, 2026.

Sabar emphasized that summoning and⁤ seeking​ clarification from Electronic System Operators (ESOs) falls ⁢under kominfo’s‍ jurisdiction, as stipulated in Government Regulation (PP) Number
