Europol Dismantles Major Synthetic Drug network
Police in multiple European countries have dismantled a major drug network and shut down 24 drug laboratories, according to Europol. The operation represents a notable blow to the production and distribution of synthetic drugs in Europe.
Operation Details
The operation, described as the largest of it’s kind targeting synthetic drug production and distribution, involved law enforcement agencies from Belgium, Czechia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain. It resulted in the seizure of approximately 1,000 tons of chemicals used in the manufacture of illicit drugs such as MDMA, amphetamine, and methamphetamine.
More than 85 individuals have been arrested, including the two primary suspects, both Polish nationals. The year-long investigation culminated in coordinated raids across the six participating countries.
Seized Materials and Impact
The 1,000 tons of seized chemicals represent a ample disruption to the supply chain for synthetic drug production. These chemicals are essential for the creation of MDMA, amphetamine, and methamphetamine, commonly found on the European illicit drug market. Europol estimates that the seized materials could have been used to produce a significant quantity of finished drugs, preventing them from reaching consumers.
