About the Novel and the Film
The Custom of the Country follows Undine Spragg, an ambitious woman from the american Midwest as she navigates and attempts to ascend the social hierarchy of New York City during the early 20th century. Wharton’s novel is considered a critical examination of American society, wealth, and the pursuit of status.
Josie Rourke, known for directing films like Mary Queen of Scots (2018) and stage productions including a critically acclaimed 2013 production of Much Ado About Nothing with the Shakespeare’s Globe, will direct the adaptation.Rourke stated that she envisioned Sweeney in the role while adapting the novel, believing Sweeney is perfectly suited to portray the “dangerous” and complex character of Undine Spragg.
