General Motors Shifts Production, Signals End of Chevrolet Bolt EV
Kansas City, KS – January 23, 2026 – General Motors (GM) is strategically reshaping its manufacturing footprint, redirecting production from China adn Mexico to its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas. This move, however, comes with the declaration that the current generation of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the sole vehicle presently manufactured at the Kansas facility, will be discontinued.
The decision reflects a broader response to evolving economic and political factors, notably the impact of previous tariff policies and the expiration of the federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credit – a program that previously offered consumers up to $7,500 in savings on qualifying EVs. These shifts have increased the cost of manufacturing vehicles in overseas locations for sale within the United States,prompting GM to reassess its production strategy.
The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV, recently released to dealerships, is projected to cease production within approximately 18 months. Despite its impending end, the Bolt EV remains a significant offering in the EV market, boasting a starting price of $29,990, making it one of the most accessible new electric vehicles for American consumers.
Looking ahead, GM has confirmed that the next-generation Buick Envision, currently produced in china, will transition to the Fairfax Assembly Plant starting in 2028. Furthermore, production of the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Equinox, presently manufactured in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, will be relocated to the Kansas factory by mid-2027.
According to a GM spokesperson, the current Bolt EV was always intended as a limited-run model. “When we revealed Bolt in October, we said and it was widely reported that it’d be a limited run model,” the spokesperson stated. “We had also previously announced the gas-powered Equinox would be coming to Fairfax in mid 2027 after Bolt production ramps down. today we’re announcing the next-generation Buick compact SUV will come to Fairfax beginning in 2028.”
While the future of the Bolt EV appears uncertain, GM maintains a portfolio of other electric vehicles, including the electric Chevy Equinox and Chevy Blazer. The company has also committed to future investments in the Fairfax Assembly Plant to support the production of next-generation, affordable EVs, tho specific timelines remain undisclosed. The possibility of revisiting the Bolt’s fate remains open, contingent on consumer demand and future market conditions.
