Trilateral Talks Resume as ukraine Faces Renewed Russian Assaults
Abu Dhabi, UAE – January 24, 2026 – As Ukraine condemns a new wave of Russian strikes resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage, delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have commenced the first trilateral peace talks as the full-scale invasion began in 2022.The meetings, taking place in Abu Dhabi, represent a crucial, albeit fragile, step towards potential de-escalation in the ongoing conflict [[1]], [[2]].
The timing of these discussions is notably poignant, coinciding with a reported Russian attack that claimed one life and injured 23 others across Ukraine. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported four injuries in the capital, while Kharkiv officials stated 19 were wounded in sustained assaults that also damaged a maternity hospital and housing for displaced persons [[3]]. Ukrainian Foreign Minister andrii Sybiha sharply criticized the attacks,stating they were a direct assault on the negotiation process itself.
Despite the ongoing violence, sources indicate some progress has been made during the talks, though the critical issue of territorial disputes remains a significant obstacle. Russia currently occupies approximately 20% of Ukraine, including portions of the Donbas region, and is reportedly seeking to retain control of these areas. Ukraine has firmly rejected any concessions on its territorial integrity.
The resumption of trilateral negotiations follows a recent proposal by former US President Donald Trump, who suggested Russian president Vladimir Putin join his “Board of Peace” – an initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts. Putin has yet to publicly confirm his participation in this organization.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the recent Russian strikes specifically targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, exacerbating the challenges faced by citizens during sub-zero temperatures. Approximately 6,000 buildings in Kyiv are currently without heating as an inevitable result of the damage.
The Ukrainian delegation,lead by Rustem Umerov,has stated the focus of the talks centers on establishing parameters for ending the war and achieving a “dignified and lasting peace.” Though, the path forward remains uncertain, particularly given the continued hostilities and the deeply entrenched positions of both sides.
