Eritrean Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Leading Human Smuggling Ring
A Dutch court sentenced Tewelde Goitom, also known as Amanuel Walid, to 20 years in prison on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, for leading a criminal organization involved in human smuggling adn extortion. Teh Overijssel District Court found Goitom guilty of subjecting migrants to “cruel,violent,and degrading treatment” during their journeys to Europe.
Criminal Network and Exploitation of Migrants
Goitom was convicted of orchestrating a network that transported migrants from Libya to Europe, often with the netherlands as a final destination for asylum applications.The court found that Goitom and his associates extorted money from the migrants’ families in the Netherlands to finance these risky voyages. Migrants held in Libyan camps were forced to contact their families under duress,who were then pressured to pay for their relatives’ passage. Release from these camps was contingent upon payment.
Presiding Judge René Melaard described the case as ”exceptionally serious,” citing both the undermining of immigration policies and the inhumane treatment of the migrants. “You, along with your accomplices, were merciless, unscrupulous, and devoid of regard for human dignity in your treatment…apparently solely to extort as much money as possible from vulnerable and helpless people seeking a better future,” Melaard stated.
Goitom was also ordered to pay over €30,000 in damages to the victims. He has two weeks to file an appeal.
International Cooperation and Ongoing investigations
The prosecutor’s office at the International Criminal Court (ICC) welcomed the verdict, noting that they had shared evidence as part of a joint task force investigating crimes against migrants in Libya. The ICC continues to investigate alleged crimes within Libya’s jurisdiction.
Related Cases and Extradition Challenges
Goitom’s trial was complicated by the delayed extradition of Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam, another key figure in the smuggling network. Habtemariam, described as one of the world’s most wanted human traffickers, was extradited to the Netherlands from the United Arab Emirates in December 2023 after escaping from custody in Ethiopia in 2020. He had previously been convicted in absentia and sentenced to life imprisonment in Ethiopia. Both men are being prosecuted in the Netherlands because Dutch authorities allege that some of the crimes occurred within the Netherlands,specifically the extortion of relatives residing there.
