Studies are identifying specific fat distribution patterns that are strongly associated with negative brain changes, including gray matter loss, accelerated brain aging, cognitive decline, and increased risk of neurological disease.
New Fat Distribution Patterns Identified
Researchers at The Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University in China, using MRI scans, have identified two previously unrecognized patterns of fat distribution linked to brain health: “pancreatic predominant” and “skinny fat.” Source
Pancreatic-Predominant Fat
The “pancreatic-predominant” pattern is characterized by unusually high fat levels in the pancreas compared to other body areas.Individuals with this pattern exhibit a proton density fat fraction – a precise MRI measurement of fat concentration – of approximately 30% in the pancreas. This is two to three times higher than in individuals with other fat distribution types and up to six times higher than in lean individuals.Interestingly, those with this pattern don’t necessarily have substantially higher liver fat levels.
“Skinny Fat” Profile
The “skinny fat” profile involves a high overall fat burden in individuals who do not appear obese based on customary BMI standards. This fat tends to accumulate in the abdominal region. Despite carrying significant fat, individuals with this profile often have a relatively normal BMI, ranking only fourth among all categories studied.
