Latvian Prime Minister to Attend 2026 Winter Olympics Opening in Italy
Milan, Italy – February 5, 2026 – Latvian prime Minister Evika Siliņa will undertake a working visit to the Italian Republic from February 6th to 8th, 2026, to participate in the opening ceremonies of the XXV Olympic Winter Games and to meet with Latvian Olympians ahead of the games’ commencement.
The Prime Minister emphasized the meaning of the Olympic Games as a unifying moment for the nation, stating, “The Olympic Games are a time when the entire country stands with its athletes, and it is important to demonstrate respect for their contribution and express support on their path to the highest achievements.”
Siliņa highlighted Latvia’s strong traditions in winter sports, noting that past successes reflect the high skill level of Latvian athletes, a focused sports policy, and the importance of state support in developing elite athletic performance.
During her visit, Prime Minister Siliņa is scheduled to attend an official reception hosted by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, for heads of state and government in honour of the opening of the winter Olympics. She will also attend the Opening Ceremony of the XXV Olympic Winter Games and participate in an official evening event for the Latvian delegation in Milan.
Latvia will be represented by its largest-ever delegation at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo, with 68 athletes competing across nine different sports. this significant representation underscores Latvia’s growing commitment to and success in winter sports on the international stage. The Prime minister’s presence at the games signifies the nation’s strong support for its athletes as they compete for Olympic glory.
