Lok Sabha Adjourned Amidst Opposition Protests,Speaker Birla Expresses Concern Over Wasted Time
The ongoing budget session of Parliament continues to be disrupted as the Lok Sabha was adjourned today following protests by opposition members. As proceedings commenced this morning, opposition MPs entered the well of the House, displaying posters and chanting slogans of “Jai Samvidhan” (Hail the Constitution).
The disruption was immediate, preventing the House from conducting business for even three minutes. Consequently, the Speaker was compelled to adjourn proceedings first until 12:00 PM and than again until 11:00 AM on Monday, February 9th.
During the commotion, Speaker Om Birla strongly reprimanded the opposition members for their conduct, urging them to uphold the dignity of the House. he emphasized his consistent efforts to ensure the Parliament functions smoothly, highlighting that Question Hour is a crucial chance for all members to raise concerns and seek answers.
“Today, there are questions pertaining to Rajpal, Priyanka Gandhi, and other members,” Speaker birla stated. “It appears you do not intend to run the House in a planned manner, but rather to create a deadlock.” He further revealed that the House has already lost 19 hours and 13 minutes due to disruptions.
Speaker Birla underscored the expectations of the 140 crore citizens of India, who expect their representatives to engage in debate and dialogue. He lamented that the current atmosphere of protest and sloganeering undermines the sanctity of the parliamentary process. “The people of the country want to see the House functioning,” he asserted. “They did not send you here to display posters and raise slogans, but to engage in discussion and dialogue.”
He concluded by expressing his disappointment, stating that if the opposition continues to obstruct proceedings, it demonstrates a intentional attempt to create a standstill within the house.
