Sydney Synagogue Shooting: Accused Returns to Court, Attack “Planned” adn Inspired by ISIS
Naveed Akram, the sole surviving perpetrator of the December 2023 attack on a Sydney synagogue, appeared in court on February 29, 2024, where the timeline of evidence was reviewed and his case was adjourned until March 9th. He reportedly responded with a simple “yeah” when asked by the judge if he understood discussions regarding the continuation of non-publication orders, which restrict media reporting on certain details of the case.
akram’s lawyer, Ben archbold, told ABC News that his client is being held in “vrey arduous conditions” and it is indeed too early to determine whether he will plead guilty.
Planned Attack inspired by ISIS
Authorities state the attack on the synagogue in Bondi Junction, Sydney, was inspired by the ideology of the Islamic State (ISIS), but that Naveed and his father, Sajid Akram, acted independently and were not part of a larger terrorist association. Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police during the attack.
Police investigations revealed the father and son had been meticulously planning the attack for months. Investigators released images showing them practicing with firearms in a rural setting. In October 2023, the pair recorded a video expressing anti-Semitic sentiments and referencing “Zionists” while seated in front of an ISIS flag.
Victims and Aftermath
The December attack claimed the life of rabbi Jacob Levi, and injured eight others. The victims included an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor, a couple who confronted the attackers, a French engineer, and a 10-year-old girl.
The attack prompted widespread shock and anger in Australia, particularly within the Jewish community, regarding security concerns. In January 2024, the Australian Parliament responded by strengthening legislation related to hate crimes and firearms control.
Previous Examination
Naveed Akram was previously investigated by Australian intelligence in 2019 when, as a teenager, he associated with individuals sympathetic to ISIS in Sydney.
