Late-Night Snacking Under Stress Linked to Poor Gut Health, Digestive Issues, and Microbiome Imbalance in Modern Study

Late-night snacking is a common habit for many, often used as a way to unwind or cope with stress after a long day. However, new research presented at the 2026 Digestive Disease Week conference suggests that this routine may do more than disrupt sleep or contribute to weight gain—it could significantly impact gut health. The study, which analyzed data from over 15,000 adults, found a notable association between chronic stress, late-night eating, and digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhea.

Researchers from New York Medical College at Saint Mary’s and Saint Clare’s Hospital examined participants from two long-term studies: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the American Gut Project. They defined late-night snackers as individuals who consumed more than 25 percent of their daily calories after 9 p.m. Among those with high stress levels, frequent late-night snacking was linked to a 1.7 times higher likelihood of reporting constipation or diarrhea compared to those with lower stress and minimal late-night eating.

Further analysis of stool samples revealed that stressed individuals who snacked late at night were 2.5 times more likely to experience bowel issues and had significantly lower gut microbiome diversity. A less diverse gut microbiome is generally associated with poorer health outcomes, as it may reduce the gut’s ability to resist inflammation and support proper digestion. Experts not involved in the research have offered plausible explanations for how late-night eating might interfere with gut function under stress. Dr. Ashkan Farhadi, a gastroenterologist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, explained that after eating, the gut enters a digestive phase focused on nutrient absorption. Approximately three hours later, it shifts into a “housekeeping” mode known as the migrating motor complex (MMC), which clears debris and bacteria from the intestines every 90 to 120 minutes. This process prepares the gut for the next day.

“When you eat a late-night snack, this digestive tidying gets delayed, and then interrupted by sleep,” Farhadi said. “Then, you are reducing the housekeeping of the gut. This can lead to bacterial overgrowth in the intestine, which raises the risk of constipation and diarrhea.” He emphasized that the gut follows a natural rhythm, and eating close to bedtime disrupts its ability to perform essential maintenance.

Dr. Marie Borum, director of the division of gastroenterology at George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates, added that late-night snacking may “exaggerate” the impact of stress on the gut. Stress alone can alter gut motility and microbiome balance, but eating late at night may intensify these effects by interfering with circadian rhythms and delaying gut recovery during sleep.

Registered dietitian Jessica Cording, based in New York and author of The Little Book of Game Changers, noted that poor sleep—often triggered by late-night eating—can further disrupt bowel habits. She recommends choosing easily digestible foods if hunger strikes after dinner, such as a banana, hard-boiled egg, or little bowl of oatmeal, and avoiding heavy, greasy, or high-sugar snacks that capture longer to digest.

The type of snack consumed at night may also matter. Farhadi pointed out that greasy or high-fat foods prolong digestion, delaying the onset of the MMC phase. “Foods that are high in salt, fat, and sugar can be exceptionally taxing on the gut and not optimal for promoting restful sleep and gut health,” Cording said. Choosing lighter options may help minimize disruption to nocturnal gut processes.

Both Borum and Cording advise finishing meals at least three to four hours before bedtime to allow digestion to complete and align with the body’s natural circadian rhythm. This timing supports the gut’s housekeeping functions and may reduce the likelihood of next-day digestive discomfort.

While the study provides valuable insights, it has limitations. Researchers relied on self-reported data for both diet and bowel habits, which can introduce inaccuracies. The use of the Bristol Stool Chart—though widely accepted in clinical settings—depends on subjective interpretation, and self-assessment may not always match clinical evaluation. These factors mean the findings show association, not causation, and should be interpreted cautiously.
