Dutch singer Lenny Kuhr has announced her decision to retire from performing and relocate to Israel, citing rising antisemitism in the Netherlands as a key factor in her choice. The 75-year-old Eurovision Song Contest winner revealed the news in an emotional Instagram post, stating that while her health and vocal abilities remain strong, she felt compelled to step away from the stage due to growing societal divisions and concerns for her safety.
Kuhr, who won the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest representing the Netherlands with her song “De Troubadour,” shared that her decision was not made lightly. She explained to regional broadcaster Omroep Brabant that whereas her performances were still well-received and she felt physically capable, she had received signs indicating it was time to end her nearly six-decade-long career. The artist emphasized that the increasing hostility toward Jewish people in the Netherlands played a significant role in her choice to emigrate.
The singer disclosed that she had previously experienced antisemitic incidents during her performances, including a disturbing event two years prior in Waalwijk where audience members unfurled a Palestinian flag and accused her family of complicity in genocide during a theater show. Kuhr noted that such experiences had led her to perform with security present in venues, though she maintained that she never allowed fear to dictate her artistry. She expressed concern about the broader implications for artistic freedom, questioning how the theater world prepares for potential threats.
Despite the challenges, Kuhr affirmed her plans to complete her current theater program, “Licht,” with performances scheduled through May 2026. Her final concert is set for May 31 in Balkbrug, although she later announced an extension of her farewell tour, with the ultimate show now planned for June 30 at the Schiller Theater in Utrecht. Tickets for select performances remain available, including the Utrecht finale, which has drawn significant interest from fans across the Netherlands.
Kuhr confirmed her intention to move to Israel in the summer following her final performance, where her children and grandson reside. Her grandson currently serves in the Israeli military, strengthening her familial ties to the country. She stated that while the farewell process is emotionally challenging, she believes Israel offers a safer and more welcoming environment for Jewish artists and individuals.
Reflecting on her legacy, Kuhr acknowledged the complexity of her departure from the Netherlands, a country where she achieved international fame and spent much of her life. She expressed sorrow over leaving but emphasized that her decision stems from a need to prioritize personal safety and peace of mind.
