A 44-year-old man, Robert Smith, was arrested and charged with eight counts of attempted murder after a July 4th shooting at a Brooklyn barbecue. The attack in Coney Island injured eight people, including four children between the ages of 6 and 14, according to New York City police.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday in the courtyard of a high-rise housing complex near Surf Avenue and West 30th Street. Police report that the victims were attending a family cookout when the suspect approached the perimeter fence and opened fire repeatedly.
Investigators identified the suspect as Robert Smith, who was reportedly dressed in all-black clothing and wearing a ski mask during the attack. Smith fled the scene immediately after the shooting, according to police reports.
Arrest and Attempted Murder Charges
Police announced the arrest of Robert Smith on Wednesday. He now faces eight counts of attempted murder, corresponding to the number of individuals struck by gunfire during the event. Legal representation for the 44-year-old was not immediately available at the time of the arrest.
At the scene of the crime, investigators recovered a TEC-9 semiautomatic handgun equipped with an extended magazine. Police also collected 10 discharged shell casings from the courtyard area, which provided critical forensic evidence for the investigation.
Victims and Injuries
The shooting resulted in eight casualties, half of whom were children between the ages of 6 and 14. The victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
The mother of a 6-year-old victim told reporters that her son is recovering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Additionally, a 21-year-old woman was listed in critical condition following the attack.
Witnesses described a scene of immediate chaos. One witness reported that people and children were screaming and running as the gunman fired into the gathering. A woman identifying herself as the grandmother of some of the young victims described the event as a party for the children that turned into chaos, stating that her grandchildren were hospitalized after the attack.
NYPD Investigation into Potential Motives
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has not yet established a definitive motive for the shooting. However, investigators are examining whether the attack was linked to a separate gang-related killing that occurred earlier in the week on the same city block.
The proximity of the two violent incidents has led police to investigate the possibility of retaliatory violence or ongoing territorial disputes within the neighborhood. Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine if Smith had a connection to the previous homicide.
