A flash fire at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao music bar in northern Bangkok killed 33 people and injured dozens on Sunday night, July 13, 2026. Authorities are investigating electrical negligence and obstructed exits, while the death toll includes four of the six core members of the house band, Totsakan, who were performing during the blaze.
The inferno tore through the single-storey venue in the Chatuchak district shortly before midnight, turning a popular weekend spot for live music and food into a death trap. According to Reuters, the death toll rose to 32 by Wednesday as victims succumbed to injuries in the hospital, though Aljazeera reports the final count at 33.
The Decimation of the Totsakan Band
The house band, Totsakan, which played roots music popular in rural areas, was on stage when the fire erupted. Four of the group’s six core members perished. The band’s lead singer and manager, Atipat Ice Wijan, survived but witnessed the chaos from off stage. He recounted to Thai TV Channel 3 that his girlfriend and the band’s lead female singer, Nahatai Breeze Sajjalert, died despite attempts by EMS teams to resuscitate her.

Other casualties among the musicians included keyboardist Preutthipong Kwang Pudmon and drummer Nattapat Biw Thamnita.
Lead singer Tik Chaichana survived only because he had stepped away to use the bathroom moments before the fire began. He later shared on Facebook that while he was safe, his belongings burned and his mind is truly not okay right now

Electrical Failure and Flammable Acoustic Foam
Investigators believe the fire was sparked by an electrical short circuit in a ceiling-mounted air conditioner. The speed of the blaze was exacerbated by the venue’s construction.
Witnesses described a sudden, violent escalation. Natthaphong Lakhorn, 26, told reporters he initially mistook white smoke coming from the stage for dry ice effects before the power failed. Other survivors described hearing a boom – a very fast boom
and seeing flames shoot out of the building.
Obstructed Exits and the Bathroom Trap
A critical factor in the high death toll was the inability of patrons to find or access exits. Many victims were found trapped in windowless bathrooms at the rear of the bar. Police Chief Kitrat Phanphet noted that one exit may have been blocked by a table selling candy, while another near the kitchen was narrowed by lockers and shelving units.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul discovered during a scene inspection that one door, previously an exit, had been bolted shut. An official informed the Prime Minister that the proprietor had locked the door to prevent customers from leaving without paying their bills. The door bore a staff only
sign, which likely deterred panicked patrons from attempting to use it.
There is a conflict in survivor testimony regarding the back door. While police suggested the door was not used, Natthaphong Lakhorn claimed he escaped through a back door near the bathrooms, guided by a security guard with a flashlight.
Compensation Disputes and Legal Fallout
The fallout has left families struggling with funeral costs.
The government is now moving to tighten regulations for entertainment venues nationwide. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul revealed that the Rong Beer Na Ladprao was not licensed to host live music, despite doing so regularly. He vowed that the owner, who was admitted to intensive care immediately after the fire, would face the utmost prosecution
