Disney+ Orders Afterlife With Archie Horror Series

The series serves as a creative return to the town of Riverdale for the team behind the long-running CW drama Riverdale and Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The premise follows a supernatural spell cast by a teen witch that backfires, resulting in an apocalyptic, zombie-overrun nightmare. As the possessed dead descend upon Riverdale, the central characters—including Archie, Betty, and Veronica—must fight for survival, a struggle that tests their long-standing friendships, romances, and loyalties.

Production and Creative Leadership

The production is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and Muckle Man Productions. The series is executive produced by creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Jimmy Gibbons via Muckle Man; Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions; and Jon Goldwater via Archie Comics Studios.

For Aguirre-Sacasa, the project represents a return to the source material that established his horror-writing career before his work on Riverdale. This was the comic book that started it all, Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement. “Getting to turn Afterlife into a TV series for the amazing team at Disney+ with our incredible partners at Berlanti Productions, WB and, of course, Jon and his Archie family is truly a full-circle moment — and the ultimate dream project for me.”

Goldwater, who serves as the head of Archie Comics Studios, expressed his enthusiasm for the adaptation, noting that the series was always destined for live-action and that he is grateful to Disney+ for the opportunity to bring the zombie invasion to television screens, as reported by TVLine.

Strategic Expansion for Disney+

The order for Afterlife with Archie marks a notable milestone for the streaming platform, as it represents one of the service’s relatively rare series pickups from an outside studio like Warner Bros. Television. Disney+ has been increasingly opening its content slate to external production houses.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, highlighted the balance of genres the new series aims to achieve. “Afterlife with Archie has always been about more than just zombies — it’s about the friendships, loyalty and humanity that make Riverdale worth fighting for,” Davis said. Roberto, Greg, Sarah and Jon have such a deep appreciation for these characters, and they’ve built something that’s equal parts thrilling and heartfelt.

Context and Character Continuity

While the series revisits the Archie Comics universe, it is established as a new version of the gang. Casting for the series has not yet been announced, and given that the characters are depicted as teenagers in this narrative, it is expected that the cast will differ from the actors who appeared in the previous iterations of Riverdale or Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

This project is the third live-action Archie Comics series adaptation for the core creative team of Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. TV. The production team also previously collaborated on the Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene.

As the production moves toward its 2027 release, the creative team continues to emphasize the unique tone of the project. Fans are going to fall hard for this new version of the gang … and maybe scream a little too, Davis added.
