A vehicle fire on a local roadway exploded into a severe forest fire in the Landes department of southwestern France on Thursday, July 23, torching the timberlands between Biscarrosse and Sanguinet. Regional reports from France 3 Régions confirmed that an estimated 100 hectares of forest burned as shifting winds and bone-dry conditions created what officials labeled an unfavorable firefighting environment.
The disaster erupted when a car caught fire on a route running through Biscarrosse, according to Actu.fr. Flames and embers leaped from the asphalt straight into the dense pine forests that define the Landes landscape. Dry summer vegetation fed the fire, letting it accelerate before ground crews could halt its advance.
Emergency Evacuations Ordered for Residents and Tourists
Faced with advancing smoke and flames, local authorities ordered urgent evacuations to safeguard residents and tourists. Sud Ouest reported that approximately 220 individuals were evacuated from two threatened neighborhoods as a safety precaution.
120 Firefighters and Aerial Units Deployed
The Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of the Landes rushed roughly 120 firefighters to the scene. Ground crews battled extreme heat and heavy smoke to draw containment lines around the active fire zone.
To slow the destruction across the heavy canopy, aerial firefighting units entered the fight. Two specialized aircraft dropped water directly onto the most aggressive sectors of the blaze, targeting areas where ground access eluded traditional fire engines.
