Mondo Robotics has launched Beni on Kickstarter, introducing a portable, all-terrain camera robot designed to autonomously follow and film people and pets in 4K resolution at speeds up to 18 mph. Developed by former Tesla humanoid robot engineer Shuo Yang, the $549 early-bird device bridges action cameras and robotics.
Most consumer robotics remain confined to behind-the-scenes warehouse tasks or predictable indoor flooring. Mondo Robotics is trying a different approach with Beni, a compact, shoebox-sized device that rolls on two motorized wheeled legs and features expressive, color-changing eyes designed to give it a friendly, approachable demeanor as it follows users across outdoor terrain.
The Palo Alto-based company launched its debut product on Kickstarter, where the campaign runs until early August 2026. Early-bird pricing for the device starts at $549, with a projected retail price of $799, and wider production shipments slated to begin in October.
Engineering a Rolling Camera Operator for Action Sports
Beni is built for outdoor use rather than flat indoor surfaces. Weighing roughly 3.86 pounds (1.75 kilograms), the robot can reach top speeds of 18 miles per hour (28.8 kilometers per hour), making it fast enough to keep pace with a runner, cyclist, or skateboarder. Its onboard chassis handles dirt, gravel, weeds, and irregular bumps, while a stabilization system called HybridFlow combines robot movement with digital image processing to smooth out footage captured from a ground-level viewpoint.

Beyond maintaining pace over rough ground, the robot includes notable mobility features. It can jump up to 10 inches to clear obstacles, dodge people, hop stairs, and automatically right itself if it tips over or falls during active use. Onboard computer vision handles tracking without requiring an internet connection.

Yang holds a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and previously worked as an engineer on Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot project. With Beni, Yang and his team aimed to build a device that allows solo content creators, parents, and pet owners to capture dynamic tracking shots without juggling a phone tripod or hiring a camera operator.
Autonomous Tracking Modes and Hardware Specifications
Users can select from multiple autonomous tracking configurations through the companion app. Tail mode follows from behind, side mode moves parallel to the subject, and circle mode travels around them to generate dynamic perspectives. A magnetic Motion Tracker can also be worn or attached to an object to guide the device during fast-moving activities, while a wrist-worn motion controller or app provides manual operation and a live first-person view.

Privacy and the Companion Persona
Because a rolling robot equipped with a camera can naturally raise privacy questions, Mondo Robotics stresses that all tracking and video recording happen entirely on-device. Footage is not uploaded to external servers unless the user explicitly chooses to export it through the companion app.
That engineering choice is paired with a deliberate design language. By giving the device expressive, color-changing eyes that nod and shake, Mondo Robotics seeks to soften the intimidating nature of an automated rolling camera, positioning it as an interactive playmate rather than a surveillance tool.
Following the early August conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign, Mondo Robotics plans to finalize manufacturing and announce broader retail availability details in October.
