Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Santa Monica Studio have announced that God of War Laufey will launch for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, according to Gematsu. The release date was confirmed during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 and subsequently via Santa Monica Studio on X.
A New Protagonist in the Afterlife
The upcoming title shifts the series’ focus away from Kratos to his wife, Laufey (also known as Faye), portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll. Described as a reluctant hero,
Faye is a warrior whose combat prowess was legendary even among the Giants. She is identified as the Guardian of the Jötnar, a lone protector of the Wildwoods, and a rebel leader who fought against the oppressive Aesir gods.
The story begins after Faye’s death, when she awakens unexpectedly in a strange land called the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods. In this realm, ruthless gods from various mythologies vie for power amidst dangerous magic. Upon awakening, Faye discovers that the plans she established to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk, prompting her to fight through the afterlife to save her loved ones.
Combat Mechanics and New Characters
Gameplay in God of War Laufey emphasizes speed, control, and mobility. According to Noisypixel, the fighting style blends the fluid movement seen in the original Greek-era games with the cinematic exploration of the Norse saga. As the Golden Hand of the Jotnar, Faye possesses soul-manipulating abilities that allow her to separate enemies’ souls from their bodies and chain together ground- and aerial-based attacks using a legendary sword.
Faye is joined by several new characters in the Everywhen:
- Phranque: A sentient cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid.
- Rue: The guardian of Faye’s sword, voiced by Perlina Lau.
Future of the Franchise
During the San Diego Comic-Con panel, Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog announced that another Kratos-led God of War game is currently in development. Barlog stated that this next mainline entry will launch after God of War Laufey and will connect directly to Faye’s story. While the Laufey title expands the universe by shedding light on a character whose story remained largely untold, Barlog framed the project as an expansion of the series rather than a departure, affirming that the team will always tell stories about Kratos.

The February 16 release date places the game in a crowded launch window. According to Fullcleared, other titles slated for February 2027 include Fable, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and Persona 4 Revival.
