The trade addresses a pressing offensive need for the Mariners, whose right-handed hitters have struggled throughout the 2026 season. Entering the week, Seattle’s right-handed bats ranked near the bottom of the major leagues in batting average (.225), on-base percentage (.305), slugging percentage (.361), OPS (.666), and home runs (49), according to ESPN.

Baltimore Shifts Strategy Toward Pitching Depth

For the Orioles, the move marked a shift toward selling at the deadline after slipping to a 54-58 record and fourth place in the American League East. Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias explained that the front office ultimately pursued exchanges of talent to improve the organization’s overall depth.

Baltimore originally acquired Ward from the Los Angeles Angels last November in exchange for right-hander Grayson Rodriguez. With his departure, the Orioles add organizational pitching depth while moving an impending free agent before the deadline.
