Across the lucrative friendlies in Nashville, New York, and Chicago, Liverpool played in front of more than 115,000 supporters, as reported by The New York Times.

The squad returned home to the UK following the two-week, three-match tour, leaving the coaching staff with significant evaluations ahead of the new campaign. Liverpool’s opening 45 minutes against Leeds marked their best period of the tour, demonstrating the effectiveness of Iraola’s intense, front-foot style when senior players are available. However, the second-half display highlighted ongoing defensive vulnerabilities, including set-piece issues and a tendency to switch off.
Squad Shortages and Missing Personnel
Throughout the majority of the tour, Iraola operated without 14 first-team players due to post-World Cup holidays and injuries. Eight players were absent due to World Cup rest, while six players missed out due to injury or recovery, including Joe Gomez, who sustained an injury during the United States trip.
Players taking post-World Cup breaks included Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Alisson, and Alexis Mac Lastiller, alongside new signing Víctor Muñoz. Additionally, Jeremy Jacquet, Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni, and Stefan Bajcetic were present on the trip but did not feature due to ongoing rehabilitation or fitness concerns. Iraola had not yet met or coached the returning international players prior to the squad reporting back for training on Wednesday following their return flight from Chicago.

The tour exposed glaring roster gaps that require attention both on the training ground and in the transfer market before the opening Premier League match away to Newcastle United. Mohamed Salah’s departure was announced in March following contract-ending talks, and five months later, a direct replacement has yet to be lined up. Furthermore, the seriousness of Conor Bradley’s knee injury leaves the team light at right-back.
In midfield, Curtis Jones entered the final 12 months of his contract amid interest from Italian champions Inter. Meanwhile, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up as stand-in club captain during the tour in the absence of Van Dijk, following the confirmation of his new five-year contract.
Academy Prospects Impress Under Iraola
The enforced reliance on youth players provided several academy prospects with valuable opportunities to impress the new coaching staff. Youngsters such as Lewis Koumas, Kieran Morrison, Luke Chambers, Ndukwe, and Talla Ndiaye featured in training and friendlies.
Nineteen-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni emerged as the player of the tour by a significant margin, growing in confidence and securing a strong claim to remain with the first-team squad rather than go out on loan. Rio Ngumoha also continued his development, scoring a deflected strike against Wrexham at Yankee Stadium and creating attacking opportunities against Leeds.
