In September 1994, a mysterious and fatal horse illness struck a stable in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra, Australia. The outbreak killed multiple thoroughbreds and claimed the life of trainer Vic Rail, marking the emergence of a deadly new zoonotic pathogen that eventually led researchers to native flying foxes.
The outbreak began in a paddock at a stable belonging to well-known Queensland horse trainer Vic Rail, located in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra. According to The Guardian, the area was known for its pastoral spaces on the outskirts of the city and its close ties to the horse-racing hub around the Eagle Farm racecourse. In September 1994, a heavily pregnant bay mare named Drama Series fell ill and was moved to a nursing stable, where she died of an unidentifiable condition.
Rapid Spread and Horrific Symptoms in Hendra Stables
Within 12 hours of the mare’s death, seven more thoroughbred horses in the stable either died horrifically or were euthanised. Veterinarians examining the animals documented a severe combination of symptoms, including fever, facial swelling, respiratory distress, bloodshot eyes, and spasms. Some horses experienced a bloody froth surging from their nostrils and mouths, stumbling around in agony while frantically washing their muzzles in water troughs or banging their heads against brick walls.
Medical professionals quickly ruled out known exotic horse diseases, and blood tests eliminated toxins or poisons as the cause. As fear grew across the Australian racing industry that the illness might threaten the national horse population, state health authorities descended on Hendra. Personnel strung up the dead horses and dissected them directly in the stable’s front yard, sending blood running down the quiet suburban streets.
Human Infections and the Discovery of a New Virus
The outbreak soon crossed species lines. Two people who treated Drama Series during her final hours fell ill. Rail, the trainer, died after spending a week in intensive care with organ failure, fluid-filled lungs, and hemorrhaging. Medical examinations confirmed he was infected with the same pathogen as the horses. Researchers identified the pathogen as a totally new virus resembling members of the morbillivirus subgroup, leading to its official designation as the Hendra virus. Epidemiologists immediately suspected a zoonotic disease that had jumped from horses to humans, potentially originating from an unknown wildlife carrier.
At the time of the 1994 outbreak, little was known about the origins of zoonotic diseases, and bats were not primary suspects. Ecologist Hume Field joined the research team as a doctoral student to help locate the natural host—the organism carrying the pathogen while experiencing little or no illness. Field described the search to The Guardian as a needle-in-a-haystack kind of thing
that spanned mangroves, swamps, woodlands, crop fields, garden sheds, caves, and horse paddocks.
The investigation expanded significantly in October 1995 after horse owner Mark Preston died suddenly in Mackay, North Queensland, from an illness presenting identical symptoms. Health authorities discovered that two of Preston’s horses had died in August 1994, a month prior to the Brisbane outbreak. Retesting blood serum from Preston and his horses confirmed antibodies to the Hendra virus, alongside an older blood sample taken during an unexplained episode of seizures a year prior. Because Hendra and Mackay are separated by approximately 1,000 kilometres, researchers concluded the virus was carried by a species capable of crossing vast distances.
