The detection places local health authorities on high alert as they investigate the surrounding neighborhood for potential vector activity. While the vast majority of dengue cases diagnosed in the United States and its territories are travel-associated—contracted during trips to parts of Latin America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, or the Pacific Islands—local transmission occurs intermittently in regions where competent mosquito vectors, specifically Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are established.
For residents and healthcare providers across the mid-Atlantic, the confirmed local case underscores a shifting landscape for vector-borne diseases.
